What Bathurst asks of a system
Heating comes first
July's mean daily minimum at Bathurst Agricultural Station is 0.6 degrees, and AdaptNSW says up to 130 nights a year below 2 degrees are recorded in the Tablelands. A reverse cycle system here does serious heating.
Summers still need cooling
January's mean maximum is 29.5 degrees, and the record is 41.5, set on 11 February 2017. Fewer than 10 days a year go above 35, but the cooling side still has to work when they do.
Mostly houses, many rented
At the 2021 Census, 84.8% of occupied dwellings in the Bathurst Regional council area were separate houses and 30.3% were rented.
Why test both modes in one visit
A system that's cooled happily all summer can still have a heating fault you won't find until the first cold night. Ask for each mode to run long enough to reach temperature. Mitsubishi Electric says the outdoor unit can pause for up to 10 minutes to defrost on cold, damp days, and a good technician knows a defrost pause from a fault.
Mitsubishi Electric recommends a professional service once a year, and the ACT Government says every year or as the manufacturer recommends. Autumn leaves time to fix anything before winter.
Your service records are part of the warranty
Keep every service invoice, because several warranties depend on them. Gree's card says its warranty is void if regular maintenance isn't carried out at intervals of no more than 12 months by a suitably qualified tradesperson. Hitachi says its warranty doesn't apply if regular service hasn't been done by an appropriate ARC licensed installer.
So the invoice should show the date, what was done on each unit, and the business's RTA number, which the ARC requires on quotes and invoices. Our warranties guide covers more brands.
Keep it, fix it or replace it?
A service is a good moment for an honest opinion on an older system. Solar Victoria says a system more than 15 years old will typically use more than three times the energy of a modern reverse cycle air conditioner.
If the technician finds the refrigerant low, that means a leak. The ARC says topping up before the system has been fully tested and all leaks repaired is illegal, so the real question becomes whether the leak repair is worth it on an old unit. If replacement wins, Bathurst households may be eligible for the NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount on a more efficient one, arranged before installation. Try our repair or replace tool.
Ducted systems and the roof space
A ducted system takes longer. Daikin's tune-up list includes inspecting the ductwork, plus there's a return air filter and zone controls. Leave the roof space to the technician: WorkSafe Victoria reports workers falling through plaster ceilings in roof spaces, and says to use crawl boards across the joists.
If the ducts themselves are old or dusty, a duct clean is a separate job worth asking about.
Questions to ask a Bathurst technician
- Will you test heating and cooling long enough to reach temperature?
- Do you hold an RAC01 licence, and will your RTA number be on the invoice?
- If you find a leak, can you put the repair in writing so I can compare it with a replacement?
- On a ducted system, will you check the return air filter, the zones and the ducts?
Your part, and the technician's
You can
- Clean the filters on your manual's schedule, all year, including winter.
- Keep every service invoice in one place.
- Tell the technician about any weak heating, noise or smell, and when it happens.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Anything in the roof space.
- Refrigerant checks and leak repairs.
- Electrical connections and controls.
- Coil and fan cleaning inside each unit.
What we'd do
Where we'd start in Bathurst
We'd book the service in autumn, ask for both modes to be tested properly, and make sure the invoice shows what was done and the RTA number. If the system is past 15 years old and the technician finds a leak or a major fault, we'd get the repair in writing and a replacement quoted before deciding. Choose someone who services reverse cycle systems through tableland winters. Our national service guide has the full checklist, and heating and cooling in Bathurst covers new systems.
