Gold Coast, Queensland
Heating and cooling on the Gold CoastMild temperatures, heavy air, and salt on the breeze.
On the Gold Coast, air conditioning is less about extreme heat and more about humidity and salt. Afternoon humidity at the Gold Coast Seaway averages 70% in January and February, yet temperatures above 35 degrees are rare. So the job here is drying the air, protecting outdoor units near the surf and, in all those apartments and townhouses, getting the building's approval first.
What's different about the Gold Coast
Damp more than hot
At the Bureau of Meteorology's Gold Coast Seaway station, January averages a top of 28.9 degrees, with dew points of 20.5 in January and 20.7 in February. Afternoon humidity there sits at 70% in both months, against a February peak of 59% at Brisbane City Centre.
Gentle winters
July's average low at the Seaway is 12.0 degrees, and Wikipedia says the coast rarely drops below 5. Heating is a small part of the job, and the heat side of a reverse cycle system covers it.
Salt near the surf
Mitsubishi Electric Australia's warranty doesn't cover damage to paintwork, metalwork or trims caused by salt or other corrosive residue. Close to the beach, where the outdoor unit sits and how it's looked after matter as much as the brand on it.
Units and townhouses
At the 2021 Census, 21.7% of occupied homes in the City of Gold Coast were flats or apartments and 20.6% were townhouses, terraces or semi-detached. A third of homes, 33.8%, were rented.
Storm season
After the Christmas 2023 storms, disaster assistance was activated for 60 Gold Coast localities, from Coolangatta and Burleigh Heads to Helensvale, Nerang and Springbrook. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred brought gusts of over 100 km/h on 7 March 2025.
Power and gas
The Gold Coast is on the Energex network, and Allgas Energy supplies its natural gas. Climate zone 2 on the national building code map, the same as Brisbane.
The jobs that come up most on the Gold Coast
A split in a unit or townhouse. With more than four in ten homes being apartments or attached housing, a lot of Gold Coast jobs are one or two splits where the outdoor unit has to fit a balcony or courtyard. Our split systems page for the Gold Coast covers body corporate approval and noise.
Servicing with salt in mind. Near the water, a yearly service is also a corrosion check. See air conditioning servicing on the Gold Coast.
Ducted in family homes. Separate houses were 56.8% of the city's occupied homes in 2021, and many of those suit a zoned ducted system.
Repairs after storms. Wind, hail and power cuts in storm season are when outdoor units take damage.
Is evaporative cooling worth it on the coast?
Rarely. The Queensland Government says evaporative coolers lose effect as humidity rises and advises switching the water pump off once regional humidity is over 65%. With afternoon humidity averaging 70% at the Seaway in January and February, that rules out much of summer.
Seeley, which makes evaporative coolers, says reverse cycle systems offer more flexibility across humid, coastal and mixed-weather regions. That matches what we'd recommend here.
Help with power bills, and PeakSmart
Gold Coast residents who hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card and have a chronic medical condition that needs cooling or heating at home can apply for Queensland's Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme. You re-apply every two years.
PeakSmart is no longer an option on a new system. Energex says the program closed to new installations on 30 November 2025, though PeakSmart units already in place keep working when the network needs them to.
What we'd do
What we'd do on the Gold Coast
We'd size the system for moisture as well as heat, because Rinnai warns an oversized unit dehumidifies less effectively and the coast's air is heavy for months. If the house is within reach of the surf, we'd read the warranty's corrosion clause before choosing a brand, and put the outdoor unit on the most sheltered side that still breathes. In a unit or townhouse, we'd get body corporate approval in writing before anyone quotes. Then we'd want an installer with a QBCC licence who works near the beach every week. Licence-checked specialists for your job and suburb see it, where we have them, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If no one on the Gold Coast takes it inside 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Queensland may see it as well.
