Before you call anyone
Check the power
Look at the switchboard for a tripped breaker. If it trips again, leave it off: Mitsubishi Electric says a breaker that trips often means the unit should stop being used until it's checked.
Check the controls
Fresh remote batteries, the right mode and temperature, and no sleep or off timer running.
Close up the room
On a sticky day, shut the doors and windows. Mitsubishi Electric warns that long runs in high humidity, or with a window or outside door open, can make condensation drip.
Clean the filters
Blocked filters starve the unit of air. Clean them the way your manual describes, with the power off first.
Look at the outdoor unit from the ground
Storm debris, bent fins, a leaning bracket or heavy rust are all worth photographing before you ring. Don't climb up to a roof or balcony-edge unit.
What tends to break here, and why
Storm damage
After the Christmas 2023 storms, disaster assistance was activated for 60 Gold Coast localities, including Robina, Nerang, Helensvale and Advancetown. In March 2025, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred's gusts topped 100 km/h. After a blow like that, look over the outdoor unit and its bracket from the ground before switching on.
Salt on the outdoor unit
Corrosion works on the coil, the casing and the fixings over time. Samsung's warranty card excludes rust and corrosive conditions such as salt spray, sand and dust, and Mitsubishi Electric's excludes salt damage to paintwork, metalwork and trims.
Humid air and leaks
Afternoon humidity at the Gold Coast Seaway averages 70% in January and February, so the indoor unit's drain gets a workout. Samsung also lists rainwater getting in through the wall hole as a cause of indoor leaks, which is worth checking after heavy rain.
Salt, storms and who pays for the repair
Weather and corrosion are common exclusions on warranty cards, so read yours before booking. For storm or hail damage, talk to your home insurer as well, and take photos before anything is moved.
For an ordinary fault on a younger unit, the brand may control who fixes it. Daikin's card says its repairs are done by Daikin or a repairer it arranges, and Mitsubishi Electric asks owners to contact an Authorised Retailer or Accredited Repairer within 30 days of noticing a defect. Whatever the card says, the Australian Consumer Law's guarantee of acceptable quality still applies.
Who can repair it on the Gold Coast
Air conditioning repair is mechanical services work in Queensland, so the business needs a QBCC licence whatever the job is worth. A technician with a restricted electrical licence for air conditioning can test and repair the unit's electrics, and anything involving the refrigerant needs a full RAC01 licence.
Questions for the repair technician
- Is this corrosion, storm damage or a part that's simply worn out?
- Will the warranty cover it, given how close I am to the beach?
- With this much rust, is the repair worth it, or should I compare a replacement?
- Does the fix involve the refrigerant, and if so, where's the leak?
- Can I see your QBCC licence number?
What we'd do
What we'd do
We'd do the safe checks, close the room up, clean the filters and photograph the outdoor unit. If the fault's still there, we'd read the warranty card for the salt and weather clauses, then call the brand, the insurer or a repair technician depending on what it says. And if the outdoor unit is old and badly rusted, we'd get a replacement quote alongside the repair before spending anything on it. Our repair or replace quiz helps with that call.
