Tweed Heads facts
NSW's northernmost town
Tweed Heads sits at the mouth of the Tweed River in Tweed Shire, beside its Queensland twin, Coolangatta. Gold Coast Airport straddles the border, partly in Tweed Heads West.
A wider urban area
The urban area runs south to Hastings Point and west along Terranora Creek, taking in Tweed Heads South, Tweed Heads West, Banora Point, Terranora and Kingscliff.
Units in town, houses further out
In the suburb of Tweed Heads, 44.2% of homes were flats in 2021 and 30.2% townhouses. In Tweed Heads South, 51.7% were separate houses, and in Tweed Heads West, 56.4%.
Older owners
The median age in Tweed Heads was 55, and 41.2% of homes were owned outright. 33.9% were rented.
Gold Coast weather
At Coolangatta, across the border, the Bureau's figures give January a mean top of 28.6 degrees and July a mean low of 10.0.
Noise rules
NSW's Noise Control Regulation 2026 sets restricted hours for home air conditioners that can be heard inside a neighbour's home. In severe or extreme heatwaves, the EPA says, air conditioners are exempt from those restricted hours.
Which licence applies in Tweed Heads?
NSW says you must hold a licence or certificate before doing air conditioning and refrigeration work in the state, including wiring such as disconnecting and reconnecting it. A Queensland QBCC licence isn't that, so ask any Gold Coast installer whether they hold the NSW one.
Some NSW air conditioning licences carry a condition excluding the electrical work. If yours does, a licensed electrician handles that part. Check any licence with Service NSW, which searches by name, licence number or location, and see our NSW licence page.
The NSW Energy Savings Scheme
NSW's Energy Savings Scheme includes an activity for installing a new high efficiency air conditioner, or replacing an old one with one. The discount comes through installers who partner with Accredited Certificate Providers, which work independently of the NSW Government.
The installer gives you a nomination form to sign before work starts, and you can't be reimbursed for work already done. A home that already has an efficient air conditioner may not qualify, and any activity tied to doorknocking without your prior consent isn't eligible. Our NSW Energy Savings Scheme guide has the detail.
What we'd do
If we lived in Tweed Heads
We'd ask every installer for their NSW licence number first and check it with Service NSW, then ask whether they work with an accredited provider and whether the job could qualify for the scheme. After that it's the same as anywhere on this coast: reverse cycle, sized for humid summers, with the outdoor unit out of the worst of the salt. Send us the job and your 2485 or 2486 postcode. Where we have licence-checked installers near Tweed Heads who do that kind of job, they'll see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If nobody near Tweed Heads takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
