Goulburn, New South Wales
Heating and cooling in GoulburnBuilt for cold nights, with summer days to match.
Goulburn needs serious heating and some real cooling. At Goulburn Airport, July's mean minimum is 0.3 degrees and January's mean maximum is 28.1, with dry summer afternoons. A reverse cycle system sized for winter is the natural starting point, and evaporative cooling is worth a look for the dry heat.
Goulburn's climate and homes
Cold for much of the year
Bureau of Meteorology averages at Goulburn Airport AWS (640 m up, 1991 to 2024) put July's mean minimum at 0.3 degrees, and the mean daily minimum across the whole year at 6.1. The lowest reading on record is minus 10.9 degrees, in August.
A lot of cold nights inland
AdaptNSW's South East and Tablelands snapshot, which names Goulburn as one of the region's major cities, says nights below 2 degrees climb to over 90 a year in central inland parts of the region, against fewer than 10 on the coast.
Warm, dry summers
January's mean maximum is 28.1 degrees with afternoon humidity of 41%, and the record high is 42.8.
Climate zone 7
The NCC lists Goulburn as climate zone 7, cool temperate, the same zone as Canberra.
Post-war brick veneer and fibro
Goulburn Mulwaree Council says many homes from the post-war period (about 1945 to 1970) were mass manufactured, and brick veneer and asbestos fibro were the two most common materials. In 2021, 87.5% of occupied homes in the council area were separate houses.
Fibro homes: tell the installer first
If your home is post-war fibro, treat the wall and eave sheeting as possible asbestos until it's been checked. Don't drill or cut through it yourself to run cables or pipes. Tell the installer before they quote, so they can plan the wall penetrations and the outdoor unit mounting.
The jobs that suit Goulburn's climate
Heating first. A reverse cycle split or ducted system can carry a Goulburn winter if it's sized for heating. Look at the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the energy label, and have it sized from a heat load for the rooms you use on a cold night. Mitsubishi Electric calls a professional heat load calculation essential.
Ducted for whole houses. With most homes detached, ducted reverse cycle or gas ducted heating is worth comparing. Jemena names the Southern Tablelands among the regions its gas network serves, so some homes will have gas to weigh up.
Gas heater safety. If you heat with gas, have the heater serviced by a licensed gasfitter at least every two years, the interval Energy Safe Victoria and the Better Health Channel both give.
Evaporative for dry heat. Goulburn's 41% January humidity is dry air, and Seeley says evaporative cooling generally performs best in hot, dry climates. It only cools, so it sits beside your heating rather than replacing it. Our evaporative cooling page explains what an install involves.
NSW licences and the ESS in Goulburn
NSW requires a licence or certificate for air conditioning and refrigeration work, and prohibits advertising that work, of any value, without a current contractor licence. Look the installer up on Service NSW's licence check before they visit.
Goulburn households may be eligible for the Energy Savings Scheme's upfront discount on an energy efficient air conditioner, subject to local installers offering it. The discount runs through an Accredited Certificate Provider, not the NSW Government, and gas space heaters installed from 1 July 2026 don't qualify.
What we'd do
What we'd do
We'd size a reverse cycle system for a 0 degree night and pick the model on its heating at 2 degrees. For summer, if the house already had good heating, we'd look at evaporative for the dry afternoons. In a post-war fibro home, we'd raise asbestos with the installer before anyone picks up a drill. When we have licence-checked installers near Goulburn who specialise in your job, they can see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If nobody around Goulburn takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in New South Wales may see it too.
