Why heat makes servicing matter more here
ActronAir says an air conditioner loses cooling capacity once it's above 35 degrees outside, and gives the example of a 14kW system dropping to 10kW or 12kW. On a Shepparton scorcher, the unit has less to give before anything's wrong with it.
A blocked filter, a dusty coil or an outdoor unit choked with leaves eats into that margin. Daikin says debris around the outdoor unit makes it run less efficiently, and that a clean filter can cut energy use by 5% to 15%. A pre-summer service is about keeping as much of that capacity as you can for February.
What's different about servicing in Shepparton
Long, hot cooling season
Shepparton is in climate zone 4, hot dry summer and cool winter, unlike Melbourne's zone 6. January and February mean maximums at the airport are 32.1 and 31.0 degrees (Bureau of Meteorology, 1996 to 2022).
Heatwaves that test old units
Shepparton reached 46.1 degrees on 7 February 2009. A heatwave is when weak spots like a slow refrigerant leak or a struggling fan tend to show up.
Heating still gets used
July nights average 3.4 degrees and the record low is -6.3. If your reverse cycle unit heats in winter, the service should test it on heat as well.
Rentals and the cooling standard
27.8% of Greater Shepparton homes were rented at the 2021 Census. From 1 March 2027, a new or month-to-month Victorian rental agreement needs an energy efficient fixed cooler in the main living area, so it's worth landlords knowing what's installed and whether it works.
A pre-summer service, step by step
Book in spring
Daikin suggests a licensed technician looks the unit over at the start of every summer. Earlier is easier to book than the week of a heat warning.
Indoor units cleaned
Filters, coil, fan and drain tray on each head. Our national air conditioning service page lists what's included.
Outdoor unit cleared
Leaves, grass clippings and anything stacked against it removed, so air can get through.
Refrigerant checked
By an RAC01 licence holder. Low charge means a leak to find and fix: the ARC says topping up first is illegal.
Run on cool, then heat
So you know both sides work before you need either.
Got an evaporative cooler instead?
Shepparton's dry summers suit evaporative cooling, and servicing a cooler is a separate job for its own specialist. Seeley says its coolers should be serviced after the first year and then every two years, more often in harsh conditions. Our evaporative cooler service page covers pads, water and drains.
What you can do before the technician comes
You can
- Clean the filters with the power off. Daikin says at least once a month through summer.
- Clear the outdoor unit's surrounds and trim plants back.
- Run the system on cool for a few minutes on a mild spring day, and note any smell, drip or noise.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Cleaning inside the indoor unit, coil and drain.
- The refrigerant check and any leak repair.
- Electrical connections and controls.
Questions to ask a Shepparton technician
- Do you hold a full RAC01 licence, and what's the business's RTA number?
- Will you check the refrigerant charge, and what happens if it's low?
- Will you clean the outdoor coil as well as the indoor unit?
- Can you test it on heat too?
- Will you list any faults in writing before doing extra work?
What we'd do
Our advice
Book the service in September or October, before the heat, and ask for the outdoor unit and the refrigerant charge to be checked, not just the filters. If the unit is old and the technician finds a leak, get the repair in writing and weigh it against replacing: our repair or replace tool helps with that call.
Whenever you're ready, tell us your postcode and what kind of system you've got. Where we have a licence-checked technician near Shepparton who services that type week in, week out, we'll pass your job to them, and if we don't, we'll tell you so. Our Shepparton heating and cooling page has the bigger picture.
