Southern Highlands, New South Wales
Heating and cooling in the Southern HighlandsA heating district with mild summers.
The Southern Highlands is heating country first. Bureau of Meteorology averages at Bowral put the July mean minimum at 2.1 degrees, and frost can turn up even in summer. Summers are mild, with a January mean maximum of 25.5 degrees, so judge any new system on its heating before its cooling.
What's different in the Highlands
High, cold and frosty
The Bowral (Parry Drive) station sits 690 m above sea level. Its 1961 to 2015 averages give a July mean minimum of 2.1 degrees. Frost is common through winter and can even occur in summer, and the lowest reading on record is minus 11.2 degrees.
Mild summers, with the odd scorcher
January's mean maximum at Bowral is 25.5 degrees, with afternoon humidity of 57%. The record high is still 40.0 degrees, so cooling isn't optional for every home.
Zone 6 on paper, cold in practice
On the Australian Building Codes Board's 2019 map, the Wingecarribee council area is climate zone 6 (mild temperate), while Goulburn Mulwaree next door is zone 7. Bowral's winter nights are a better guide to sizing than the zone's name.
Almost all houses
At the 2021 Census, 90.4% of occupied homes in Wingecarribee were separate houses and only 2.3% flats or apartments. 44.6% were owned outright, and 10.0% of private dwellings were empty on census night.
Gas and electricity
Endeavour Energy's network powers the Southern Highlands, and Jemena names the region among those where its gas network serves regional centres. So in the larger towns, mains gas may be one of your options.
The heating and cooling jobs that suit the Highlands
Reverse cycle heating. A reverse cycle split or ducted system heats and cools from one unit, which suits a district where winter is the main event. With Bowral's July nights averaging 2.1 degrees, the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the energy label tells you more than the headline kW.
Whole-house heating. With nine in ten homes detached, ducted heating is worth weighing, whether that's gas ducted or ducted reverse cycle.
Gas heater safety. If you run gas heating, a licensed gasfitter should service it at least every two years, the interval Energy Safe Victoria and the Better Health Channel give. Our gas heater service page explains the carbon monoxide check.
Cooling, the smaller job. With a 25.5 degree January average, you may only need cooling in a living area and a bedroom or two. At 57% January humidity, evaporative cooling is less of a natural fit than in drier places: Seeley says it generally performs best in hot, dry climates.
NSW rules and discounts that apply here
Air conditioning and refrigeration work in NSW needs a licence or certificate, and that includes the associated wiring. Some licences carry a condition that excludes the electrical side, so ask who's doing it. Service NSW's licence check searches by name, licence number, ABN or location.
Southern Highlands households may be able to get the NSW Energy Savings Scheme's upfront discount on an energy efficient air conditioner, depending on whether local installers offer it. It comes through an Accredited Certificate Provider that works independently of the NSW Government, and the nomination form has to be signed before installation. Gas space heaters installed from 1 July 2026 get no ESS incentive. Our ESS guide has the rest.
What we'd do
Where we'd start
We'd choose for winter. A reverse cycle system with strong heating at 2 degrees, sized from a heat load for the rooms you use on a frosty evening, will do most of the work in a Highlands home. If an existing gas heater still runs well, we'd keep it serviced while the electric option is quoted. Send us the job and licence-checked local installers who specialise in that kind of work will see it. Your contact details go to the one who takes it, and if no one in the Highlands has taken it after 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
