Albany, Western Australia
Heating and cooling in AlbanyMild summers, so heating does more of the work.
Albany's summers are milder than Perth's, Bunbury's or Geraldton's, with January afternoons averaging 22.6 degrees, and its winters are mild and wet. So judge any system here on its heating at least as much as its cooling. Wind and salt around King George Sound shape where an outdoor unit should go.
Albany's heating and cooling facts
Temperatures
Bureau of Meteorology-sourced averages for Albany (1991 to 2020) give a mean maximum of 22.6 degrees in January and 22.9 in February, and a July mean minimum of 9.1. Albany Airport averages 24.8 in January.
Humidity and wind
Afternoon humidity averages 55% in January and 68% in July. A cool ocean breeze brings relief on summer evenings and nights, and strong southerly winds drive the town's wind farm.
Climate zone
NCC 2016 puts Albany in zone 6, mild temperate, one step on from Perth, Bunbury and Geraldton in zone 5.
Harbours and the sound
Princess Royal Harbour and Oyster Harbour are well protected from wind and heavy seas, while King George Sound is open water to the east. The GAA's guide rates calm harbour foreshores as C4 and the first 200 m from surf beaches as C5.
Storm history
Albany had the worst losses when ex-tropical cyclone Alby passed in April 1978. Winds reached 150 km/h and most homes had partial or complete roof failure.
Housing and gas
90.4% of the City of Albany's occupied homes were separate houses at the 2021 Census and 0.5% flats or apartments, and 25.8% were rented. Energy Networks Australia lists Albany among the places with ATCO gas network lines and meters.
What that means for your system
Heating comes first. The ACT Government's example energy label shows heating capacity at 7 degrees and at 2 degrees outside, and with July nights averaging 9.1, the 7 degree rating is closer to what you'll ask of a reverse cycle system here. Read the red heating stars on the label as well as the blue.
Cooling needs are modest. With summer afternoons in the low 20s and that evening sea breeze, a split in the living area may be all the cooling you need. At 55% January humidity, evaporative has less to offer than inland, and CHOICE doesn't recommend it for humid or wet climates.
Wind and salt decide the outdoor unit's spot. Put it where it has air around it but some shelter from the strong southerlies, keep it out of direct spray near the water, and ask about coastal coil protection. After what Alby did to Albany's roofs, it's also fair to ask how a bracket or roof frame is fixed.
Damp winters and servicing
July afternoons average 68% humidity. Mitsubishi Electric says dirt inside a unit can cause odours and encourage mould, and it recommends a professional service once a year. For a system that heats through a damp Albany winter, that's the schedule we'd keep. Our air conditioning service page explains what's included.
Getting the work done
WA's rules apply in Albany as everywhere in the state: an ARC licence for the refrigerant, and a licensed electrical contractor, whose licence number starts with EC, for the switchboard and fixed wiring. Gas heaters need a gasfitter with a Class G permit.

What we'd do
Our take for Albany
We'd choose a reverse cycle system for its heating figures, sized for the rooms we use on cold, damp evenings, and treat cooling as the bonus. We'd site the outdoor unit out of the southerly and the spray, ask for coastal protection near the harbours or the sound, and book a yearly service.
