Bought a Samsung online? Here's the catch
Samsung's installation page says buyers in eligible postcodes can have their air conditioner installed by Samsung-approved experts. Everywhere else, you arrange installation with a service provider yourself.
Samsung also runs an installer locator, where you pick a product type and search for a Samsung air conditioner installer nearby, and a Climate Solutions Partnership whose partners it calls "climate specialists specially trained to meet all of your air care needs".
Its Australian range covers split systems, including multi-split to connect several rooms, ducted systems and 360 cassette systems, all sold by Samsung Electronics Australia of Homebush Bay. We don't sell Samsung units and aren't a Samsung partner.
Samsung's warranty, by system
| Wall-mounted single split | Ducted, cassette and multi-split | |
|---|---|---|
| Parts and labour | 5 years, residential use | Check the warranty card for your model |
| Compressor | 10 years: the first 5 parts and labour, the last 5 parts only | 5 years parts and labour |
What the extra compressor years mean
From year six to year ten on a wall split, the compressor part is covered but the labour to fit it isn't. Keep the invoice and the warranty card for the full ten years, not just the first five.
Samsung adds that this warranty sits on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Where Samsung's cover stops
- Rust or corrosive conditions, which the card says include "salt spray, sand and dust".
- Units in a movable dwelling such as a caravan or house boat.
- Units installed, removed or re-installed at another location by anyone other than Authorised Samsung Service Personnel.
If you're finding your own installer, ask
- Which ARC licence does your technician hold? A single split under 18 kW can go in on the restricted RSS03 licence, and a multi-split needs the full RAC01.
- Who's doing the electrical connection? Samsung's card says it must be a qualified electrician or other suitably qualified and licensed person.
- What's your RTA number? It should be on the quote.
- Where will the outdoor unit go, and is it out of salt spray and blowing sand?
- What workmanship warranty do you give on the install itself?
Small jobs you can do, and the ones you can't
You can
- Clean the filters about every 2 weeks, Samsung says, or more often if you have pets.
- If water drips inside, check the drain hose outside points down, runs straight and isn't sitting in water.
- For a musty smell, Samsung suggests airing the room and running Fan mode for 3 to 4 hours.
- Find your manual by model code on Samsung's manuals page.
Leave to a licensed installer
- The install and the electrical connection.
- Moving the unit, since Samsung's card only keeps cover if its own service personnel do it.
- A leak that keeps going after the hose checks. Samsung says a severe leak likely needs a technician.
What we'd do
What we'd do
Unless Samsung's own install covers your postcode, we'd book the installer before buying the unit, so you're not storing a box while you hunt for someone licensed. Then we'd leave the split where it's first fitted: if you move house, Samsung's card only keeps cover for a re-install done by its own service personnel. A split specialist will also check the outdoor spot for salt spray and sand, which the card excludes.
