What counts as an area?
An area is a group of postcodes, drawn how areas are drawn. Inside it, jobs are split by type, so a split system specialist, a ducted gas heating specialist and an evaporative cooler specialist can all cover the same postcodes and each see only the jobs in their own line of work.
The job types we'll use are job categories. We'd expect them to follow the way homeowners describe the work: installs, servicing and repairs, for each kind of system.
Why can one postcode need several specialists?
Melbourne shows it well. In a 2021 survey of Victorian home owners in areas with mains gas, done by JWS Research for the Victorian Government, half mostly heated their homes with gas ducted heating. In the same survey, 23% had an evaporative ducted system and 18% a ducted reverse cycle system.
So a suburban Melbourne postcode needs a ducted gas heating specialist as much as a split system one, and an evaporative specialist besides. Cities further north lean towards cooling, and their job types will reflect that.
What do you need to see jobs in an area?
- A licence or registration for that state. Installing a split in Victoria is plumbing work needing registration, and NSW needs a licence or certificate for air conditioning and refrigeration work.
- Technicians with the right ARC licence for the job type. RSS03 covers single-head split installs under 18 kW, not regas, refrigerant repairs or multi-head systems.
- Your RTA certificate, public liability insurance and an active ABN.
- An honest number for how many jobs a week you can take, so homeowners in a busy area aren't left waiting.
How many installers see each job?
Each new job is shown to the local installers who cover the area and do that kind of work. If none of them takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in the homeowner's state may see it too.
Another part is settled. If an installer stops meeting our checks, because a licence lapses or insurance isn't renewed, they stop seeing new jobs.
Where will we start?
Our locations section lists every state and city the site covers. A city having a page isn't the same as having an installer there, so a job with no local taker may wait 48 hours before installers elsewhere in the state can see it.
If the area you want isn't open yet, apply anyway and name your postcodes. It tells us where installers want to work, and that helps decide what opens next.
What we'd do
Where we'd start
Choose the postcodes you already drive to and the jobs you'd happily do five days a week. An area full of work you don't enjoy, or an hour away in traffic, rarely lasts past the first busy season.
