What's different about Kingston
Colder than central Hobart
The Kingston station (52 m, 1965 to 1977) averaged a July high of 12.5 degrees and a July low of 2.4, with a record low of minus 7.2 in June. Summers are very mild, with a January mean maximum of 21.6, though it has reached 40.0.
A growing family suburb
Kingston, about 12 km south of Hobart, is the seat of Kingborough Council and one of the fastest-growing areas in Tasmania. At the 2021 Census, 89.1% of its occupied homes were separate houses, and 28.9% were rented.
Post-war roots
After 1950 many post-war Dutch migrants settled in an area of Kingston they called 'Little Groningen', today's Firthside.
Kingston Beach and the Derwent
Kingston Beach, about 2 km south-east of the town, sits on the River Derwent at the mouth of Browns Rivulet. The Galvanizers Association rates the first 50 m back from a sheltered bay C4 for corrosion, and 50 m to 1 km back C3.
Choosing a heat pump for Kingston
On the energy label, read the red heating stars for the cold zone, and find the heating capacity at 2 degrees, the colder of the two heating test points. That figure tells you far more about a Kingston July than the cooling numbers do.
In a bigger house, one heat pump in the lounge won't reach the bedrooms. Ducted heating in Hobart covers whole-house options, from a ducted heat pump to gas, and a few well-placed splits are often the simpler route.
Is gas even on your street? Tas Gas Networks says to check your address with its pipeline locator, and to lodge an expression of interest if the property doesn't front the network. Don't assume either way.
Tasmanian rules that apply in Kingston
Installing or servicing refrigerated air conditioning is prescribed plumbing work in Tasmania, on top of the technician's national ARC licence. Anyone offering to contract for it must hold a contractor's licence of the right occupation and class.
EPA Tasmania's guideline keeps heat pump noise to 45dB(A) from 7am to 10pm and 40dB(A) overnight, measured a metre from the neighbour's nearest wall. On a close suburban block, the outdoor unit belongs on your side, away from their bedroom.
For rentals, Tasmania's minimum standards require a heating device in a room that can be the main living area, and a heat pump counts.
What we'd do
Our advice for Kingston
We'd put a heat pump with a strong output at 2 degrees in the main living area first, ideally from a specialist who services Kingborough homes every winter. Near Kingston Beach we'd ask for coastal protection on the outdoor unit and a sheltered spot for it. And we'd book the service in autumn, before the cold months, not after the first frost.
Send us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers who do heat pump work south of Hobart can see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If nobody near Kingston takes it within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in Tasmania may see it too.
