Traralgon, Victoria
Heating and cooling in TraralgonColder nights than Melbourne, and proper summer heat.
Traralgon needs serious heating and real cooling. The nearest long-term station, Latrobe Valley Airport at Morwell, averages 26.8 degrees in January and a July low of 3.7, and Traralgon's nights run about 2 degrees colder than Melbourne's. A reverse cycle system sized for both ends of the year is where we'd start.

Homes
At the 2021 Census, 88.0% of occupied homes in the City of Latrobe, where Traralgon is the largest town, were separate houses. 5.9% were semis, terraces or townhouses, 5.6% flats or apartments, and 25.4% were rented.
What's different about heating and cooling in Traralgon
Traralgon asks more of a system at both ends than its climate zone suggests. July nights average 3.7 degrees at the airport, so heating capacity sets the size for most homes. Summer afternoons average 26.8 in January, and the valley has reached 46.3.
On those hot days a system loses some of its punch: ActronAir says cooling capacity drops above 35 degrees. A heat load that only uses average weather can leave a west-facing room short in a heatwave, so ask how the installer allowed for it.
It also matters what you're replacing. Seeley says evaporative cooling needs windows and doors open to let air out, while a reverse cycle system works with the house closed up, and it heats in winter too.
The jobs that come up most in Traralgon, and why
Reverse cycle for heating and cooling. With most homes being separate houses, the choice is usually between a split system for the living area and whole-home ducted air conditioning.
Servicing in both modes. A system that works hard in summer and winter should be serviced once a year and tested in heating and cooling, booked before the season it works hardest in.
Gas heater checks. Mains gas reaches 83% of Victorian households, by Environment Victoria and Renew's count, and Energy Safe Victoria wants every gas heater looked at by a gasfitter at least once every two years. See gas heater servicing.
Old gas ducted heaters. If yours is near the end, compare a like-for-like replacement with ducted reverse cycle before it fails in July.
Rentals and rules in Traralgon
A quarter of Latrobe homes are rented. Landlords don't have to rip out a gas heater that works. The electric rule bites from 1 March 2027 only if the main living area heater dies for good and can't be fixed, and then the new one must be energy efficient electric. Rental cooling arrives in two steps: new or month-to-month agreements from 1 March 2027, everyone from 1 July 2030.
Whoever fits a split here needs two credentials, Building and Plumbing Commission registration for the plumbing side and an ARC licence for the refrigerant, with a licensed electrician for any new wiring. Some systems that heat and cool can get a VEU discount from an accredited provider, and the program is voluntary. Our Victorian licence guide covers how to check.

What we'd do
If it were our Traralgon home
We'd look for one reverse cycle system that handles both the frosty nights and the hot afternoons, and judge it on heating output when it's near zero outside and cooling output above 35 degrees. We'd book its service every year before winter. And if there's an old gas heater in the house, we'd have it checked every two years and plan its replacement in summer, not in a July emergency.
