Wangaratta, Victoria
Heating and cooling in WangarattaPlan for the coldest morning, then the hottest afternoon.
In Wangaratta, start with the heating. The National Construction Code puts it in climate zone 7, cool temperate, which is a colder zone than nearby Benalla or Wodonga, and Wangaratta Aero has recorded -7.2 degrees. Summers still bite, with 40 degree days 2 to 4 times a year on average, so the system you choose has to do both well.
Wangaratta's climate and homes
Climate zone 7
Wangaratta is in the National Construction Code's cool temperate zone 7. Nearby Benalla and Wodonga are both zone 6, the mild temperate zone.
Cold winter nights
Bureau of Meteorology figures for Wangaratta Aero (1987 to 2022) put July's mean minimum at 2.5 degrees, and the record low is -7.2, set in June. Afternoon humidity in July averages 67%.
Hot summer days
January's mean maximum is 32.1 degrees and February's 30.9, with January afternoons averaging 28% humidity. The record is 45.8.
Heatwaves from the centre
Occasional severe heatwaves arrive when hot, dry air moves over from Australia's central deserts. Temperatures of 40 and a little above happen 2 to 4 times a year on average.
Almost entirely houses
At the 2021 Census the Rural City of Wangaratta had 10,637 occupied separate houses, 89.8% of homes, and just 10 flats or apartments. 22.2% of homes were rented.
Heating comes first here
Size the system for a frosty July morning, not a mild spring evening. Mitsubishi Electric says a proper heat load calculation has to account for climate, orientation, insulation, windows and ceiling height, and in a cool zone 7 town, make sure the winter load is part of that sum.
Reverse cycle handles Wangaratta's cold. The ACT Government's guide says good systems still work at -10 degrees, and that air at 0 degrees still holds over 90% of the heat energy of air at 40. On the energy rating label, compare the heating capacity at 2 degrees as well as the cooling figure.
For a whole house, zoning saves running a system into empty rooms. The ACT Government says heating only the areas you're using can be better for efficiency, and a ducted system can be split so the bedrooms and living areas run separately. If you want radiant warmth instead, hydronic heating is worth a look: the ACT Government says it can be zoned down to one room.
When hot air arrives from the centre
On a 40 degree day, even a healthy unit may struggle. Mitsubishi Electric says the cooling effect may not be enough when it's very hot outside. Before calling anyone, check the filters are clean, nothing's blocking the indoor or outdoor unit, the fan is on high, and the doors and windows are shut.
If it's still not coping, our not cooling guide helps you work out whether it's the weather, the size or a fault.
What a good Wangaratta quote shows
- The heating capacity at 2 degrees for each unit, next to the cooling capacity.
- For ducted, how many zones there are and which rooms sit in each.
- Who's doing the electrical work, and whether a new circuit is included.
- The business's RTA number, which the ARC requires on quotes.
- The manufacturer's warranty and the installer's own workmanship warranty, in writing.
Your part, and the installer's
You can
- Clean the filters as your manual says, power off first.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear, and let it finish defrosting on frosty mornings.
- Close doors to rooms you're not heating or cooling.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Working out the heat load and size.
- All refrigerant work, under an ARC licence.
- Building and Plumbing Commission registration, and any new circuit.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd treat Wangaratta as a heating job that also needs to cope with heatwaves. That means sizing from a heat load for winter, comparing models on their heating at 2 degrees, and zoning a whole-house system so you're not heating empty rooms. Then we'd use an installer who heats and cools homes in cold climates all the time.
When you're ready, send us your job and postcode. If we have licence-checked installers near Wangaratta who specialise in that kind of work, they'll see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If none near Wangaratta takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Victoria may see it too.
