Wodonga needs heating for cold winter nights and cooling for hot, clear summers. Across the river at Albury Airport, July nights average 3.1 degrees and January days 32.4. Wodonga is on the Victorian side, so Victorian licences and rental rules apply here, not the NSW ones that cover Albury.

What shapes heating and cooling in Wodonga

Winter nights near freezing

Wodonga's climate figures come from Albury Airport AWS, just over the Murray. Its Bureau of Meteorology averages (1993 to 2022) give a July mean minimum of 3.1 degrees, and its lowest recorded temperature is -4.0.

Hot, clear summers

The same station averages 32.4 degrees in January and 31.1 in February, with a record of 46.1. Wodonga gets around 125.1 clear days a year, mostly in summer and early autumn.

Climate zone 6

The National Construction Code puts Wodonga in climate zone 6, mild temperate. Its table lists Albury as zone 4, so the two sides of the river don't even share a climate zone on paper.

Mains gas in town

Australian Gas Networks lists Albury-Wodonga among the regional centres its gas distribution network serves, so gas heating is part of the local mix.

One in three homes is rented

32.6% of occupied homes in the City of Wodonga were rented at the 2021 Census. 88.9% were separate houses, 8.8% semi-detached, terrace or townhouses, and 1.7% flats or apartments.

Heating a Wodonga home: gas or reverse cycle?

If you already have gas ducted heating that works, you're not required to change it. DEECA is clear that an existing home doesn't have to swap gas space heating for electric. Just keep it serviced by a qualified gasfitter, at least every two years on Energy Safe Victoria's advice.

When it's time to replace it, the ACT Government's comparison is a useful one. Gas heats your home quickly, it says, but a reverse cycle system will have much lower running costs. Some gas ducted heaters can take add-on cooling through the same ducts, but Rinnai says not every heater can, so it needs assessing. Our reverse cycle vs gas guide goes through the choice.

Building new? From 1 January 2027, Victorian plumbers can't connect reticulated gas to a new home or to an existing building without a gas connection, so a new home in Wodonga needs its heating planned without mains gas.

Gas heaters and carbon monoxide

Energy Safe Victoria says any gas heater, old or new, can spill carbon monoxide, and you won't smell it. Warning signs include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and people or pets getting sick at the same time, or feeling unwell only at home. If you suspect it, leave the house and get into fresh air, turn off gas appliances and open windows and doors, call 000 in an emergency, and don't use the heater again until a qualified gasfitter has checked it. A carbon monoxide alarm is a good back-up, but ESV says it's never a substitute for servicing.

Renting in Wodonga

With a third of homes rented, Victoria's rental standards matter here. A rental's main living area must have a fixed heater in good working order, and from 13 October 2026, gas and electrical safety checks every two years apply to all Victorian rentals. From 1 March 2027, if the living area heater permanently fails, its replacement must be energy efficient electric. A working gas heater can stay.

Cooling follows: it's needed from 1 March 2027 when a new agreement starts or one goes month-to-month, and in all rentals from 1 July 2030. Our Victorian rental heating rules guide has the detail.

Wodonga or Albury: whose rules?

The house's side of the river decides. In Wodonga, a reverse cycle install is plumbing work needing Building and Plumbing Commission registration and an ARC refrigerant licence, with new wiring by a Registered Electrical Contractor, and gas heater work is for a licensed gasfitter. Albury homes follow NSW rules instead, which our Albury page covers.

Questions to ask a Wodonga installer

  • Is my gas ducted heater compatible with add-on cooling, and how do you know?
  • If I go reverse cycle, how will it heat the house on a July night?
  • Who on your team holds the BPC registration, ARC licence and electrical licence?

What you can do, and what you can't

You can

  • Clean your air conditioner's filters as the manual says.
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm if you have gas heating, and test it.

Leave to a licensed installer

  • Opening, servicing or adjusting a gas heater.
  • Refrigerant work.
  • Electrical wiring and new circuits.

What we'd do

If we lived in Wodonga

If our gas ducted heater was healthy, we'd keep it and get it serviced by a gasfitter every two years. When it reached the end of its life, we'd look hard at reverse cycle, which also gives us summer cooling. If we were letting a property, we'd check the living area heater and book the two-yearly safety checks well before anyone asked.

Whenever you're ready, tell us the job and your postcode. Where we have licence-checked installers near Wodonga who specialise in that work, they see it, and the first to take it is the one who gets your contact details. If none near Wodonga takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Victoria may see it as well.

Questions people ask

Do I have to replace my gas heating in Wodonga?
No, not as an owner-occupier. Victoria has no rule forcing existing homes off gas space heating. In rentals, the change only applies from 1 March 2027 when the main living area heater fails for good.
How often should a gas heater be serviced?
Every two years at the least, by a qualified gasfitter, is ESV's advice. Victorian rentals with gas also need a gas safety check every two years.
Should I switch from gas to reverse cycle?
There's no rush if your heater works and is serviced. When it's due for replacement, weigh it up: the ACT Government says gas heats quickly but reverse cycle has much lower running costs. Our running cost tool lets you work it through with your own electricity rate.
Does VEU apply in Wodonga?
Yes, Wodonga is in Victoria. VEU is voluntary, runs through accredited private providers and only covers air conditioners that heat and cool, with a minimum co-payment. It doesn't apply in Albury.
