Albury, New South Wales
Air conditioning and heating in AlburyNSW rules, and a climate that asks for both.
Albury needs cooling for its summer heat and heating for its frosty winters. Albury Airport averages 32.4 degrees in January and 3.1 in July, with around 17 days above 35 in high summer and approximately 20 nights a year below freezing. Albury is in NSW, so NSW licences and the NSW Energy Savings Scheme apply here, not the Victorian rules over the river.
Albury's climate and homes

On Bureau of Meteorology averages for Albury Airport AWS (1993 to 2022), January's mean maximum is 32.4 degrees. There are around 17 days above 35 in high summer, and the highest temperature recorded at Albury is 46.1, on 4 January 2020. January afternoons average 28% humidity, and 45% across the year.

A fair share of townhouses

Gas is available
Australian Gas Networks names Albury-Wodonga among the regional centres its gas distribution networks serve.
The jobs Albury homes usually need
Reverse cycle for living areas and bedrooms. It cools through those 35 degree days and heats on frosty mornings from one system. Splits suit a few rooms, and a zoned ducted system suits a larger detached house.
Townhouses and shared walls. With nearly one in five Albury homes semi-detached, terraced or a townhouse, the outdoor unit may have to go in a small courtyard or close to a neighbour. The ACT Government's guide says to avoid enclosed courtyards and never box a unit in with slat fencing, because it needs fresh air and room to be serviced.
Gas heating, kept or replaced. If you run gas heating, Seeley says gas heaters should be serviced at least once every two years by a licensed gas fitter. If you're thinking of switching, our reverse cycle vs gas guide helps you compare.
Licences and the ESS in Albury
In NSW you need a licence or certificate to do air conditioning and refrigeration work, including installing and servicing a system and the wiring that goes with it. Some NSW air conditioning licences carry a condition excluding the electrical work, so ask who's doing that part. You can look up a licence with Service NSW's licence check, by name, number, ABN or location. The installer also needs an ARC licence to handle refrigerant.
The NSW Energy Savings Scheme can take a discount off a new or replacement energy efficient air conditioner, as an amount in the installer's quote. It comes through an Accredited Certificate Provider that works independently of the NSW Government, not from the Government itself, and only where local installers offer it. You'll need to sign the nomination form before installation starts, and gas space heaters installed from 1 July 2026 aren't eligible. Our NSW Energy Savings Scheme guide has more.
Warning signs on an Albury quote
- No licence number on the ad or quote. NSW building trade ads must show it, along with the licensee's name.
- No RTA number starting with AU on the quote. The ARC requires it.
- An ESS offer from someone who knocked on your door without an invitation. Activities connected with unsolicited doorknocking aren't eligible.
- Pressure to sign a big system on the spot during the quote visit. A deal struck at your kitchen table can be an unsolicited agreement with a 10 business day cooling-off.
What's on you, and what's on the installer
You can
- Clean the filters as your manual says, with the power off.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear and give it room, especially in a small courtyard.
- Check a licence on Service NSW before you sign.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Sizing from a heat load.
- Refrigerant handling, under an ARC licence.
- The electrical connection, by someone licensed for it in NSW.
What we'd do
What we'd do in Albury
We'd go reverse cycle for both seasons and get it sized from a heat load, with the outdoor unit somewhere it can breathe, not tucked into a closed courtyard. We'd check the installer's NSW licence on Service NSW and ask early whether they offer the ESS discount, because the paperwork has to be signed before the job starts.
When you're ready, tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers around Albury who specialise in that work will see it, and only the one who takes it is given your details. If nobody around Albury takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in New South Wales may see it too. Our Albury air conditioning service page covers keeping a system going.
