Is a service licensed work in Albury?
Yes. NSW says you must hold a licence or certificate to do air conditioning and refrigeration work, and that includes maintaining and servicing a system, along with associated wiring such as disconnecting and reconnecting its electrical parts. Self-contained plug-in units, such as portable air conditioners, are the exception.
Two more layers sit on top. Checking or handling the refrigerant needs a full RAC01 licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council; the restricted RSS03 licence doesn't cover service work on the refrigerant. And some NSW air conditioning licences carry a condition that excludes the electrical work, so if a technician needs to disconnect anything, ask whether their licence covers it.
What Albury's climate asks of a system
Summer peaks
Albury Airport AWS averages a January maximum of 32.4 degrees (Bureau of Meteorology, 1993 to 2022), with around 17 days above 35 in high summer. The energy rating label rates cooling capacity at 35 degrees outside, so on those days a unit is working past the conditions it's rated at.
Frosty nights
Approximately 20 nights a year fall below freezing, and July's mean minimum is 3.1 degrees. A reverse cycle unit on heat will stop now and then to defrost: Mitsubishi Electric says for up to 10 minutes.
Courtyards and shared walls
17.5% of homes in the Albury council area were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses at the 2021 Census. An outdoor unit in a small, enclosed courtyard can be short of fresh air, which the ACT Government's guide warns against, and awkward to reach.
Dry summer air
Afternoon humidity averages 28% in January. If you have an evaporative cooler rather than reverse cycle, it needs its own evaporative cooler service on the manufacturer's schedule.
What an Albury service should cover
- Filters, coil, fan and drain tray cleaned on every indoor unit.
- The outdoor unit cleared and its coil checked, particularly if it's in a courtyard.
- Refrigerant charge checked by an RAC01 technician, with any leak found and fixed before anything is added.
- Electrical connections checked by someone whose NSW licence covers it.
- A run in both cooling and heating.
- A written list of anything that needs repair, kept separate from the service.
When a service turns up something bigger
If the technician finds a leak, a failing fan or a tired compressor, get it in writing and take a day to think. Our national air conditioning service page and repair or replace tool help with that decision.
If you decide to replace an old unit, the NSW Energy Savings Scheme may take a discount off a new energy efficient air conditioner, through an Accredited Certificate Provider that's independent of the NSW Government. It only works where the installer offers it, and the nomination form must be signed before installation begins: you can't claim it back afterwards.
Between visits
You can
- Clean the filters with the power off, on your manual's schedule. Samsung says about every two weeks, more with pets.
- Sweep leaves out of the courtyard around the outdoor unit.
- Note any smell, drip or new noise and mention it at the service.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Anything inside the indoor or outdoor unit.
- Refrigerant checks and leak repairs.
- Disconnecting or reconnecting electrical parts.
Questions to ask an Albury technician
- What's your NSW licence number, and does it cover the electrical side?
- Do you hold an RAC01 licence for the refrigerant check?
- Will you test it on heat as well as cool?
- What's the business's RTA number? It belongs on the invoice.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd book the service once a year, in spring if the system mostly cools or in autumn if it's the main heater, and we'd check the technician's NSW licence on Service NSW before they arrive. We'd want someone with an RAC01 licence who services reverse cycle systems every week, and any repair written up for us to decide on later.
Tell us what you've got and your postcode. Where we have licence-checked technicians near Albury who service that type of system, they can see the job, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If none of them takes it within 48 hours, NSW technicians further from Albury may see it too. Our Albury heating and cooling page covers new systems.
