Gympie, Queensland
Heating and cooling in GympieHotter days and colder nights than the coast.
Gympie asks more of a heating and cooling system than the coast does. December days average 31.3 degrees at the Gympie station, and July nights drop to a mean minimum of 6.4. A reverse cycle system sized for both ends suits most homes, and the local extra is flooding, which decides where the outdoor unit and switchboard should sit.
What's different about Gympie?
Inland heat
Bureau of Meteorology averages at the Gympie station put December's mean daily maximum at 31.3 degrees and January's at 31.2. The hottest day on record there reached 42.4 degrees, on 4 January 2014.
Real winter nights
July's mean daily minimum is 6.4 degrees, against 9.7 at Sunshine Coast Airport, and the record low is minus 4.3 degrees, set on 20 July 2007. The heating side of a reverse cycle system gets proper use here.
Drier afternoons than the beach
Average afternoon humidity peaks at 60% in February and falls to 41% in September. Summer is still humid, just less so than on the coast.
The Mary River
In February 2022 Gympie had its worst flooding since 1893, with the Mary River peaking at 22.96 metres on 28 February and up to 3,600 homes inundated in the city. Most of the river's floods come between December and April, in the middle of cooling season.
Houses, and old ones
At the 2021 Census, 91.2% of occupied homes in the Gympie council area were separate houses and 1.9% were flats or apartments. Local heritage places are mapped in the planning scheme's Heritage and Neighbourhood Character Overlay.
Energex, without mains gas
Gympie sits at the northern end of the Energex network, which stretches from Coolangatta to Gympie. The Queensland Government's list of natural gas distribution areas doesn't include Gympie.
Which jobs come up most in Gympie, and why?
Reverse cycle sized for both seasons. With summer days averaging 31.3 degrees and winter nights 6.4, a system chosen on its cooling figure alone may not suit July. Ask for the heating capacity to be shown as clearly as the cooling, and see installation in Gympie.
Moving units above flood level. Lifting the outdoor unit and switchboard clear of floodwater is one of Get Ready Queensland's suggestions for flood-prone homes. If your home took water in 2022, a replacement is the natural time to do it.
A service that tests both modes. A system that heats in winter and cools in summer should be run both ways at each service. See servicing in Gympie.
Salt on the Cooloola Coast. Out at Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach, Gympie Regional Council sets building flood levels from storm tide data for each spot. Homes there have sea air to think about as well, and our coastal homes guide covers it.
Is evaporative cooling an option inland?
It's more workable here than at the beach, but it's not a sure thing. The Queensland Government says evaporative coolers lose effectiveness as humidity rises, and advises switching the water pump off when the region's humidity is above 65%. Gympie's February afternoons average 60%, close to that line.
An evaporative cooler also does nothing for July nights, so you'd still need heating. Our evaporative or refrigerated guide lays out the choice.
Power, concessions and licences
Energex opened a depot in Gympie in July 2008 with 51 staff, giving it a bigger local base for restoring power after wild weather. PeakSmart is no longer an option for a new system: Energex closed it to new installations on 30 November 2025.
Queensland's Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme is open to residents with a qualifying chronic medical condition who hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card. You re-apply every two years.
Installing or servicing air conditioning in Queensland needs a QBCC licence at any value, plus an ARC refrigerant licence for the technician. Our licence guide shows how to check both.
What we'd do
If it were our house in Gympie
We'd go reverse cycle and make the installer show the heating capacity as plainly as the cooling, because July nights here are colder than on the coast. If water has ever come near the house, we'd want the outdoor unit set above the flood level and any switchboard work done with that in mind. Tell us the job and your postcode. Where we have them near Gympie, licence-checked installers who specialise in that kind of work can see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If no installer near Gympie takes it within 48 hours, it can be seen by installers elsewhere in Queensland too.
