Tamworth, New South Wales
Heating and cooling in TamworthTwo hard seasons, so choose for both.
Tamworth needs both halves of heating and cooling. Temperatures pass 35 degrees on around 20 to 25 days a year, and frosts are frequent and often severe. So the right system here has to handle two hard seasons, and the real choice is whether one reverse cycle system does both, or a cooler and a heater share the job.
What's different about Tamworth
Hot, dry summers
The Tamworth Airport climate table gives a January mean daily maximum of 32.9 degrees. The average summer maximum is 33 degrees, and the building code lists Tamworth as climate zone 4: hot dry summer, cool winter.
Severe frosts
July's mean daily minimum at the airport is 2.2 degrees, frosts are frequent and often severe, and the record low is minus 6.6 degrees.
The 2017 heatwave
Tamworth's record high of 45.9 degrees was set during a significant heatwave on 12 February 2017.
Mostly houses
At the 2021 Census, 88.1% of occupied dwellings in the Tamworth Regional council area were separate houses, 9.1% semi-detached or townhouses and only 1.8% flats or apartments.
Gas in town
AGIG has completed its acquisition of the Tamworth Gas Network, which supplies gas to the Tamworth region.
Three common ways to cover both seasons
| Ducted reverse cycle | Evaporative plus a heater | Reverse cycle splits | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Cools the whole house with the windows shut | Cools well in dry heat, with windows or doors open | Cools the rooms you choose |
| Winter | Heats the same rooms through the same ducts | Needs a separate heater, gas or electric | Heats the same rooms |
| Humid days | Unaffected, and it dries the air | Less effective, Seeley and the ACT Government say | Unaffected |
| Worth knowing | Ducts should be insulated to at least R1.5 (ACT Government) | Needs a water supply, and a gas heater needs servicing too | Zone by switching on only the units you need |
Does evaporative cooling suit Tamworth?
It can. Seeley says evaporative cooling generally performs best in hot, dry climates, and Tamworth's climate zone is defined by hot dry summers. It works by drawing outside air through water-soaked pads, so a door or window has to stay open for the air to escape.
The catch is winter. An evaporative cooler only cools, so you'd still need heating for those frosts. And on the occasional humid summer day, the ACT Government says evaporative systems are less effective. Our evaporative or refrigerated guide goes through it, and an evaporative specialist can tell you how a unit would perform in your house.
Gas or electric heating?
Homes on the gas network have a real choice. The ACT Government says gas heats a home quickly, but reverse cycle has much lower running costs, and it turns each unit of electricity into 3 to 6 units of heat. Your own numbers come from the running cost tool: input power in kW, times hours, times your rate.
Two NSW details matter here. The Energy Savings Scheme gives no incentive for gas space heaters installed from 1 July 2026, but it does cover installing or replacing an air conditioner with a high efficiency one. And if you're replacing gas ducted heating with ducted reverse cycle, the ACT Government says the old gas ducts are too narrow to reuse.
Reverse cycle copes with the frost. The ACT Government says good systems keep working at minus 10 degrees, and Mitsubishi Electric says heating pauses for up to 10 minutes while the outdoor unit defrosts on cold, damp mornings. That's normal, not a fault.
The jobs that come up most in Tamworth
With so many separate houses, ducted reverse cycle is an obvious candidate for whole-home comfort, and splits are the simpler answer for a room or two. Swapping an old cooler and heater for one reverse cycle system is another job worth asking about. Either way, the system works hard in both seasons, and our Tamworth service page explains how to keep it going.
Licences and quotes in NSW
Air conditioning work in NSW needs a licence or certificate, and some licences exclude the associated electrical work, so ask who's doing it. Gas fitting is separate specialist work with its own licence. You can look up any installer's licence on Service NSW before you agree to a visit.
What we'd do
If it were our Tamworth home
Starting fresh, we'd lean towards one reverse cycle system, ducted or a few splits, chosen on its heating at 2 degrees as much as its cooling, because Tamworth tests both. If you already have working gas heating and love evaporative in summer, keeping that pair is reasonable, but service both. Tell us what you want done. Licence-checked local installers who specialise in that kind of job will see it, and the one who takes it gets your contact details. If nobody around Tamworth takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
