Heating and cooling in CairnsCooling and drying the air, almost all year.
In Cairns, air conditioning is about cooling and drying the air for most of the year. July nights at the Bureau of Meteorology's Cairns station average a minimum of 17.2 degrees, and February afternoons average 71% humidity. So the choices that matter are sizing for humidity, looking after the unit in wet, salty air, and keeping it above flood level.
What's different about Cairns
Warm winters, humid summers
At the Cairns station, December's mean maximum is 31.8 degrees and July's mean minimum is 17.2. Wikipedia describes hot, humid summers and very warm winters, with a wet-season dew point averaging 23 degrees.
The tropical design brief
The ABCB map puts Cairns in climate zone 1. The Queensland Government's aims there are to cool the home all year round, catch breezes with good ventilation, shade the whole house with wide eaves, and insulate and seal any air-conditioned rooms.
Apartments and renters
At the 2021 Census, 15.7% of occupied dwellings in the Cairns council area were flats or apartments, more than double Townsville's 7.0%, and 35.0% were rented.
Floods and storm tide
Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 pushed the Barron River past its 1977 record, the worst flood since records began in 1915. For homes in storm tide prone areas, the QRA recommends moving electrical wiring, the meter box and other installations above the adopted storm tide level.
Near the water
Beachside suburbs such as Machans Beach, 9.9 km north of the CBD, contend with storm surge, and sea air is hard on outdoor units. Daikin's warranty card makes extra corrosion protection in sea air the owner's job.
Electric only
Cairns isn't on the Queensland Government's natural gas distribution list, and it's on Ergon Energy's regional network.
The jobs that matter most in Cairns
Choosing a system here is mostly about humidity. A unit sized from a heat load keeps drying the air instead of cycling off early; Rinnai says oversized systems short cycle and dehumidify less effectively. Our page on installation in Cairns covers sizing and placement.
Servicing never really has an off-season, because the unit runs most of the year in warm, moist air. Servicing in Cairns explains what to ask for, mould included.
When something goes wrong, look for water first: a unit dripping inside, or one that floodwater has reached. Repairs in Cairns starts with the safe checks.
Renting, or in a unit block?
If you rent, a new or replacement system is the owner's decision, so start with your property manager and say what you need.
In an apartment, expect the body corporate to want a say in where the outdoor unit goes and how the pipes run. Our apartments and strata page explains what to ask before anyone quotes.
Safe for you, and for a technician
You can
- Clean the filters often. Daikin suggests at least monthly through summer.
- Keep windows and doors shut while the aircon runs, so it isn't fighting humid outside air.
- Know where the isolator is before cyclone season starts on 1 November.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Cleaning mould from the coil, fan and drain.
- Raising an outdoor unit and its wiring above flood or storm tide level.
- Refrigerant and electrical work, and any unit you can't reach safely from the ground.
What we'd do
Our advice for Cairns
Pick reverse cycle for its cooling and drying, sized properly rather than big, with the outdoor unit out of the worst of the salt and above any flood or storm tide level. Keep the doors shut when it's on, the filters clean, and book a professional service every year. If you rent or live in a unit block, sort out approvals before anyone quotes.
