What a Geraldton service has to allow for
Peak heat late in summer
Summers average 32 to 33 degrees, with some days over 40. A unit with a dirty coil or a tired fan is most likely to show it then, so a service early in summer leaves time to fix what's found.
Surf and salt
The GAA's guide grades the first 200 m from rough seas and surf beaches as C5 and 200 m to 1 km as C4, and says 1 to 10 km back along ocean fronts with breaking surf and significant salt spray rates C3.
Coastal or inland
Sea breezes cool Geraldton's coastal suburbs on summer afternoons, while inland suburbs run hotter. Inland units work harder through the season, and coastal ones take more salt.
Coil protection
Daikin says all its outdoor coils carry an anti-corrosion coating it calls Blue Fin, and still calls maintenance and positioning essential. Ask what your brand offers, and whether its warranty expects you to add protection near the sea.
What a good Geraldton service includes
Clean filters, a clean coil and fan inside, a drain that runs freely, and an outdoor unit that's clear of debris with a coil that isn't corroding. A licensed technician should also check the electrical connections and, if needed, the refrigerant charge.
That charge check needs a full RAC01 licence from the ARC. The restricted RSS03 covers installing single-head splits, not service work on the refrigerant. The national air conditioning service page lists the rest.
What makes it a bigger job
Several indoor units, a ducted system's return air filter and zones, or an outdoor unit high on a wall all add time. So does salt: a coil that's crusted or corroding may need more than a routine clean, and that should be written up separately before any extra work starts.
Questions to ask a Geraldton technician
- Will you check the outdoor coil and fins for corrosion?
- Do you hold an RAC01 licence?
- What's your RTA number for the paperwork?
- Will repairs be written up and quoted separately?
What you can do between visits
You can
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and debris, which Daikin says can make it run less efficiently.
- Clean the filters as your manual says, more often through summer.
- Note any room that stops cooling properly on the hottest days.
Leave to a licensed installer
- The coil, fins and anything electrical.
- Refrigerant checks and any leak repair.
- Corrosion repairs on the outdoor unit.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd book the service for early summer, well ahead of February, and ask for the outdoor unit to be checked for salt every time if we were within a few kilometres of the surf. We'd want an RAC01 technician who services our type of system regularly, and anything beyond the service in writing first.
