For most Nowra homes, a reverse cycle install makes sense: one system covers 27.6 degree January afternoons and 6.8 degree July nights. Size it with the hot extremes in mind, keep the outdoor unit out of the sea breeze if you're near the water, and if you want the NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount, sort it out before a single hole is drilled.

Nowra conditions that change the install

Hot extremes

Nowra reached 45.6 degrees on 21 December 2019, and foehn winds blow particularly in late winter and spring. ActronAir says air conditioners lose cooling capacity above 35 degrees, and gives the example of a 14kW system dropping to 10kW or 12kW.

Mild winters, colder up the valley

July's mean minimum at HMAS Albatross is 6.8 degrees. AdaptNSW says cold nights below 2 degrees increase moving away from the coast, so a home inland along the Shoalhaven will lean harder on heating.

Sea air

The Shoalhaven has 109 beaches, and most residents live around Nowra, Jervis Bay and Sussex Inlet. A lot of outdoor units here sit in salt air.

Mostly houses

87.2% of occupied homes in the Shoalhaven were separate houses at the 2021 Census, and just 2.0% apartments. For most people the outdoor unit goes on their own wall or ground, without a strata committee involved.

Gas on the network

Evoenergy owns and operates the gas network in Nowra, so if you heat with gas now, reverse cycle is an option to compare rather than a forced change.

Sizing for Nowra

Start from a heat load, not a rule of thumb. Mitsubishi Electric calls a professional heat load calculation essential, covering climate, orientation, insulation, windows and ceiling height.

Ask the installer to check both loads for each room: cooling on a hot afternoon and heating on a cold night. Then size for whichever is bigger in that room. A west-facing lounge near the coast and a back bedroom up the valley can come out quite differently.

Rinnai warns that an undersized system leads to insufficient cooling or heating, while an oversized one short cycles and dehumidifies less effectively. In a humid Nowra summer, that second point is worth remembering.

Where the outdoor unit goes near the sea

Mitsubishi Electric's operating instructions list salty places like the seaside among places to avoid. Near Jervis Bay or the beaches, ask for the most sheltered wall that still gets fresh air and can be reached for servicing.

Then read the corrosion clause for the model you're quoted. MHIAA, Carrier and Toshiba all make extra corrosion protection the owner's responsibility near the sea. Daikin treats all its outdoor coils with its Blue Fin coating, yet its warranty card still puts that duty on the owner. Ask what the bracket and bolts are made of, too.

Licences, discounts and paperwork in NSW

NSW requires a licence or certificate for air conditioning work, including the wiring that goes with it, and some licences carry a condition excluding the electrical side. Advertising the work without a current contractor licence is prohibited, and NSW trade ads must show the licence number.

For the ESS discount, your installer must partner with an Accredited Certificate Provider and give you a nomination form to sign and return before installation begins. Energy NSW is clear that work already done won't be reimbursed.

If you agree to a deal at the kitchen table after asking for a quote, NSW Government guidance says it can still be an unsolicited agreement, with a 10 business day cooling-off. Our cooling-off guide explains what that means.

Questions to ask a Nowra installer

  • Did you size each room for both the hottest afternoons and the coldest nights?
  • Where will the outdoor unit go, and how will it be protected from salt?
  • What does the warranty say about corrosion for this model?
  • Who does the electrical work, and does their licence cover it?
  • Do you offer the ESS discount, and which provider do you work with?
  • What's your RTA number, for the quote and invoice?

What we'd do

If it were our home

We'd have a reverse cycle specialist size each room for a foehn afternoon and a cold valley night, and put the outdoor unit on the most sheltered wall that still breathes. We'd read the corrosion clause before signing, and if the ESS discount was on offer, we'd get the nomination form signed before anything else. Then we'd book the first service for a year out.

Questions people ask

What size air conditioner do I need in Nowra?
It depends on the room, not the town. Rinnai's guide puts most small rooms up to 20 square metres at 2.5 kW, but a west-facing room or a high ceiling changes that, so ask for a heat load. Our size calculator is a sensible start.
Can I claim the ESS discount after the install?
No. The nomination form has to be signed and returned before installation begins, and Energy NSW says completed work won't be reimbursed.
Is a coil coating enough protection near the beach?
It helps, but it doesn't change the warranty. Daikin coats every outdoor coil and still makes the owner responsible for extra corrosion protection in sea air. Placement and regular wash-downs matter as much.
