What Nowra does to an air conditioner
Salt air
Most Shoalhaven residents live in the north-east, around Nowra, Jervis Bay and Sussex Inlet, on a coastline of about 160 km with 109 beaches. Near the water, salt settles on the outdoor unit's coil, casing and bolts.
Humid summers
Afternoon humidity at HMAS Albatross averages 57% in January and 55% across the year. Mitsubishi Electric says dirty filters cause condensation inside the unit that helps mould grow, so the filters and coil need regular attention here.
Used in both seasons
January's mean maximum is 27.6 degrees and July's mean minimum 6.8, so a reverse cycle system in Nowra is cooling through summer and heating through winter.
Homes that sit empty
At the 2021 Census, 23.1% of Shoalhaven private dwellings were unoccupied on census night. If a unit that's been sitting idle smells musty when you switch it on, Samsung suggests ventilating the room, running Fan mode for 3 to 4 hours, and cleaning the drain and filters.
What a Nowra service should include
The outdoor unit, properly
Coil, casing, bracket and bolts checked for corrosion. ActronAir's terms say owners in sea air should wash the outdoor unit, panels and coils down regularly with a mild detergent, so ask for it to be part of the visit.
Filters, coil and drain
Daikin's tune-up list includes cleaning coils, flushing drains and tightening electrical connections. Through a humid summer, a clear drain is what keeps water going outside rather than down your wall.
A refrigerant check
Only a technician with a full RAC01 licence can check or handle the charge. Low refrigerant means a leak, which has to be found and repaired before any recharge.
Both modes tested
Run on cool and on heat before the job's signed off.
Findings in writing
Corrosion or any other fault written up as a separate item, so you can decide on it later.
What makes a Nowra service bigger or smaller
Distance from the water is the biggest local factor. A unit facing the breeze off Jervis Bay is likely to need more cleaning and a closer look at its fixings than one inland along the river.
Then come the number of units and how easy they are to reach. MHIAA's warranty terms expect a unit to be safely accessible with a 1.7 metre ladder, and a second-storey head or a roof-mounted outdoor unit takes longer.
Time since the last service matters too. A unit left for years may need a strip-down of the coil and fan, closer to a deep clean than a routine visit.
Licences for service work in NSW
In NSW, a licence or certificate is needed for work to install, maintain and service an air conditioning system, including associated wiring such as disconnecting and reconnecting. Some licences exclude the electrical side, so ask. You can look the business up on Service NSW's licence check before booking.
For anything involving the refrigerant, ask for an RAC01 technician. The ARC's restricted RSS03 licence doesn't cover service work that touches the refrigerant.
Between visits: you, and the technician
You can
- Clean the filters on your manual's schedule. Daikin says more often in dusty or polluted conditions.
- If the manual allows it, rinse the outdoor unit from the ground, with the power off at the isolator first.
- After cooling on a humid day, run Fan mode to dry the inside, as Mitsubishi Electric recommends.
- Keep plants, boards and fishing gear clear of the outdoor unit.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Opening the indoor unit and cleaning the coil, fan and drain tray properly.
- Refrigerant checks and leak repairs.
- Treating or replacing corroded brackets and fixings.
- Electrical connections and controls.
What we'd do
What we'd book
We'd book a yearly service in autumn or early winter, ahead of the foehn days, with the outdoor unit wash-down and a corrosion check written into the job. We'd ask for an RAC01 technician who works near the coast every week, and keep every service invoice together, because brands can ask for maintenance records when you make a warranty claim.
