Nowra, New South Wales
Heating and cooling in NowraBoth seasons, plus the salt air.
Nowra needs both heating and cooling. At the HMAS Albatross station, January's mean maximum is 27.6 degrees and July's mean minimum is 6.8, and the town has reached 45.6 degrees. Reverse cycle covers that range from one system, and if you live near Jervis Bay or the beaches, the outdoor unit needs a plan for salt air.
What's different around Nowra
Mild averages, hot extremes
HMAS Albatross (109 m up, 2000 to 2024 averages) gives 27.6 degrees for January and 6.8 overnight in July. The extremes run from 45.6 degrees on 21 December 2019 to minus 0.9 on 24 August 2002.
Foehn winds
Nowra gets a foehn effect, particularly in late winter and spring. A foehn is a warm, dry wind coming down off higher ground, so a hot day can arrive well before summer.
River and coast differ
AdaptNSW's Illawarra snapshot says average summer maximums reach 26 to 28 degrees inland along the Shoalhaven River, and that cold nights below 2 degrees become more common away from the coast. A home up the valley can need more heating than one near the water.
A long coastline
The City of Shoalhaven stretches about 160 km along the coast, with 109 beaches, and most of its people live in the north-east around Nowra, Jervis Bay and Sussex Inlet. Homes near the bays and beaches live with salt air.
Houses, and plenty of empty ones
At the 2021 Census, 87.2% of occupied homes in the Shoalhaven were separate houses and 2.0% apartments, and 23.1% of private dwellings were unoccupied on census night.
Gas is here
Evoenergy owns and operates the gas network in Nowra. If you heat with gas now, moving to reverse cycle is a choice rather than a necessity.
What Nowra homes usually need
Reverse cycle for both seasons. The NCC lists Nowra as climate zone 6, mild temperate, and reverse cycle heats in winter and cools in summer from the same unit. Air conditioning installation in Nowra goes through sizing and siting.
Servicing, especially near the sea. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, which is why several brands' warranties make extra corrosion protection the owner's job. See air conditioning service in Nowra.
Cooling headroom for the hot days. ActronAir says an air conditioner loses cooling capacity above 35 degrees, so a system that just copes in an average January can fall behind on a foehn day.
Evaporative, with caution. Seeley says evaporative cooling performs best in hot, dry climates and doesn't recommend it in humid ones. With January afternoons averaging 57% humidity here, a refrigerated system is the more reliable choice for most rooms.
Salt air and the outdoor unit
Mitsubishi Electric lists salty places such as the seaside among places to avoid installing. ActronAir's warranty terms say that in sea air the owner must wash down the outdoor unit, panels and coils regularly with a mild detergent. Read the corrosion clause for the exact model you're quoted, and see our coastal homes guide.
NSW rules that apply in Nowra
Air conditioning work in NSW needs a licence or certificate, including the associated wiring. Check any installer on Service NSW's licence check before they visit.
Nowra households may be eligible for the Energy Savings Scheme's upfront discount on an energy efficient air conditioner, but it has to be arranged before installation: completed work isn't reimbursed.
NSW's 2026 noise regulation restricts the hours air conditioners can be used when they're heard in a room of a neighbour's home, and the EPA says air conditioners are exempt from those restricted hours during severe or extreme heatwaves. Our noise guide has more.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd put in reverse cycle, sized with some cooling headroom for the foehn days and enough heating for a cold night up the valley. Near the water, we'd site the outdoor unit on the most sheltered wall that still gets fresh air, then book a yearly service and wash it down the way the warranty asks. Around Nowra, where we have them, licence-checked installers who do your kind of job can see it, and your phone number and email go only to whichever of them takes it. If nobody around Nowra takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in New South Wales may see it too.
