Yeppoon, Queensland
Heating and cooling in YeppoonWarm, humid nights and salt in the air.
In Yeppoon, the air conditioner's main job is the summer night: January minimums average 24.0 degrees at the Esplanade weather station, and summer afternoons are humid. Sea air along the Capricorn Coast is hard on outdoor units, so regular servicing and where the unit sits matter more here than in Rockhampton. Reverse cycle covers the few cool winter nights as well.
Yeppoon at a glance
Milder days, warmer nights
At the Bureau of Meteorology's Yeppoon The Esplanade station, January and February share a mean daily maximum of 29.4 degrees, a few degrees under Rockhampton's. Nights are another story: January's mean minimum is 24.0 degrees.
Humid summers
Average afternoon humidity is 71% in December, January and February, with a January average dew point of 22.5 degrees. Dew point measures how much moisture the air holds, and the higher it is, the muggier it feels.
Salt-laden air
The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) warns that the salt-laden, moist air of coastal areas can quickly corrode metal connections, and that homes close to the ocean need more frequent inspection and maintenance than those further inland.
Cyclone coast
Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia passed just west of Yeppoon as a Category 5 system on 20 February 2015. The QRA rates the winds the town felt as Category 2 and 3, and ABC News reported 234 properties damaged in Yeppoon.
Big houses
In the Livingstone council area, which includes Yeppoon, 88.4% of occupied private dwellings were separate houses at the 2021 Census and 45.9% had four or more bedrooms.
All-electric
Yeppoon isn't on the Queensland Government's list of natural gas distribution areas, and it's on Ergon Energy's regional network. For the cool nights, we'd use a reverse cycle system's heat mode rather than look for gas.
Servicing an air conditioner near the sea
Mitsubishi Electric recommends a professional service once a year wherever you live. Close to the Yeppoon foreshore, the outdoor unit also needs looking after in between. ActronAir's warranty terms, for one, describe the extra corrosion protection owners must apply in sea air as regularly washing down the outdoor unit, panels and coils with a mild detergent.
Ask the technician to check the bracket, bolts and fixings as well as the coil. That's where the QRA's warning about corroding metal connections applies most.
Humidity adds its own work inside. Mitsubishi Electric says dirty filters cause condensation in the unit, which helps mould grow, so keep the filters clean right through summer. Our air conditioning service page and coastal homes guide go further.
Choosing a system for a Yeppoon home
Most homes here want cooling that also dries the air overnight. Rinnai says an oversized system short cycles and dehumidifies less effectively, so a bedroom unit sized from a proper heat load often feels better than a bigger one.
With so many four-bedroom houses, a multi-split or ducted system is worth comparing with separate splits. Either one runs from a single outdoor unit, which also means one unit to protect from the salt.
Evaporative cooling is a poor fit. The Queensland Government advises switching an evaporative cooler's pump off when humidity is above 65%, and Yeppoon's summer afternoons average 71%.
When you're ready, tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers near Yeppoon who specialise in that work will see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If no one near Yeppoon takes it within 48 hours, Queensland installers further away may see it too.
Yours to do, and theirs
You can
- Clean the filters about every two weeks through summer, as several brands suggest.
- Rinse salt off the outdoor unit from the ground, power off first, if your manual allows it.
- Know where the isolator and the switchboard are before cyclone season starts on 1 November.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Cleaning inside the indoor unit, where mould grows.
- Checking brackets, bolts and fixings for corrosion.
- Any refrigerant or electrical work, and units you can't reach from the ground.
What we'd do
If we lived in Yeppoon
We'd choose reverse cycle sized for warm, humid bedrooms rather than the biggest unit on offer, put the outdoor unit on the most sheltered side that still gets good airflow, and ask what coil protection and warranty terms apply near the sea. Then a service every year before November, and a wash-down in between.
