What's different about Queanbeyan
Sub-zero July nights
At Queanbeyan Bowling Club (580 m), temperature records from 1909 to 1956 give a July mean minimum of minus 0.2 degrees and a January mean maximum of 29.0. Googong, 10 km south, sits higher again at 746 m.
Across the border
Queanbeyan is in NSW, next to the ACT, with Canberra about 15 km away. It's the seat of Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
Gas is still connectable
Evoenergy's ACT Region gas network reaches Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong and Bungendore. Evoenergy says the ACT's block on new gas connections since 8 December 2023 does not apply in NSW.
Flats and renters in town
In the suburb of Queanbeyan at the 2021 Census, 35.6% of occupied homes were flats or apartments, 25.1% semis or townhouses and 38.7% separate houses. 44.2% were rented.
Heating first, then the gas question
With July nights below freezing, pick any reverse cycle system on its heating. The ACT Government's guide, written for Canberra next door, suggests an 'H2' rating and says good systems still work at minus 10 degrees. Ask for the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the label.
Gas is still a choice here. If you keep a gas heater, have a licensed gasfitter service it at least every two years. If you're replacing it, reverse cycle vs gas heating sets out the trade-offs, and ducted heating in Canberra covers the whole-house options.
NSW incentives, not ACT ones
The ACT's Home Energy Support rebate is for ACT residents, so it doesn't cover a Queanbeyan home. Under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, some air conditioner installs can come with an upfront discount in the installer's quote, delivered through Accredited Certificate Providers that work independently of the NSW Government. The installer gives you a nomination form to sign before work starts, and gas space heaters installed from 1 July 2026 don't qualify. Our NSW Energy Savings Scheme guide has the details.
Units and strata
For a flat in a NSW strata scheme, installing a reverse cycle air conditioner counts as a minor renovation: you ask the owners corporation, and it needs more than 50% of the votes cast at a meeting unless a by-law lets the committee decide. Work that changes the building's outside is a major renovation. See apartments and strata.
What we'd do
What we'd do
In a Queanbeyan house we'd plan for July: a reverse cycle system with an H2 rating and a strong output at 2 degrees in the main living area, and a check of the old gas heater if it's staying. In a unit, we'd get the strata vote sorted before collecting quotes, because that sets where the outdoor unit can go.
Tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers who work in Queanbeyan and specialise in that job can see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If we don't have anyone close yet, the form tells you on the spot.
