What Blacktown's climate and homes mean for the job
The sea breeze stops short
Coastal sea breezes only reach as far as Homebush, east of Blacktown, so days run hotter and nights colder than on the coast.
Hot days
Wikipedia's summary of Bureau of Meteorology records puts Blacktown at 29.6 days a year above 30 degrees, against 11.1 at Observatory Hill. The old station's January mean maximum was 28.3 degrees (1955 to 1975).
Frosty mornings
The same records give 11.0 nights a year below 5 degrees and 2.3 below zero, with a July mean minimum of 4.5.
Houses and townhouses
At the 2021 Census, 65.4% of occupied homes were separate houses, 18.6% semis or townhouses and 15.8% flats. 27.0% of dwellings had four or more bedrooms.
Zone 6, and many renters
The ABCB's map puts Blacktown in climate zone 6 (mild temperate), and 43.4% of homes were rented in 2021.
Cooling for the long, hot afternoons
ActronAir says air conditioners lose cooling capacity above 35 degrees, and AdaptNSW says Western Sydney averages 10 to 20 days like that a year. In a Blacktown house, ask what the system delivers at 35 degrees, not just its rated size.
Evaporative cooling is sometimes suggested out west because afternoons are drier than on the coast. Seeley, which makes evaporative coolers, says they work best in hot, dry climates but struggle on humid days, and they don't heat. Our evaporative or refrigerated guide compares them.
Heating for frosty mornings
Check the heating capacity on the energy label at 2 degrees, the colder of its two test points. On a frosty morning, Mitsubishi Electric says a unit on heat can stop for up to 10 minutes while the outdoor unit defrosts, and white vapour from the outdoor unit then is normal.
If you heat with gas, have the heater serviced at least every two years, which is Energy Safe Victoria's advice. See gas heater service in Sydney.
What you can do, and what the installer does
You can
- Keep leaves and clutter away from the outdoor unit, as Daikin advises.
- Clean the filters as your manual says, more often through a long summer.
- Book a service in spring, before the first run of hot days.
Leave to a licensed installer
- The heat load and sizing for both seasons.
- Anything involving refrigerant, which needs an ARC licence.
- New circuits and wiring.
What we'd do
Our take for Blacktown
We'd treat heating and cooling as equal jobs and ask for both capacities in writing: cooling at 35 degrees and heating at 2. In a house, that usually points to ducted reverse cycle with zones; in a townhouse, a couple of well-sized splits. Tell us what you need and licence-checked installers around Blacktown who do that work will see it. Whoever takes it is the only one who gets your contact details, and if no installer near Blacktown takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
