What's different about Ryde
Between the city and Parramatta
Ryde is 13 km north-west of the CBD and 8 km east of Parramatta, on the north bank of the Parramatta River, about 59 m above sea level.
Apartments rising
Buildings like Stellar Apartments are an example of Ryde's redevelopment. 45.1% of homes were rented in 2021, so many households need the owner's go-ahead first.
Zone 5, the milder band
The ABCB's climate zone map shades the City of Ryde as zone 5, warm temperate, with the eastern suburbs, while Parramatta next door is zone 6.
Heritage along Victoria Road
Willandra, Addington House and The Retreat on Victoria Road, and St Anne's church and cemetery, are among Ryde's heritage-listed sites.
New apartment or older house?
In a newer apartment, check whether the building already has a spot or a by-law for outdoor units before anyone quotes. Without one, NSW strata rules treat a new reverse cycle unit as a minor renovation that needs owners corporation approval. If you rent, it starts with the owner.
In an older house, start with how old the current system is. Solar Victoria says a system over 15 years old typically uses more than three times the energy of a modern reverse cycle air conditioner, so if an old unit is also playing up, replacing it deserves a serious look. Our repair or replace tool helps you decide.
Questions for a Ryde installer
- How did you work out the size, room by room, and what's the heating capacity as well as the cooling?
- Where will the outdoor unit go, and how loud is it on the energy label?
- Does my switchboard need work, and who's doing the electrical side?
- If you're removing an old unit, how is its refrigerant recovered?
- What's your NSW licence number, and is your business's RTA number on the quote?
What we'd do
If we were in Ryde
In an apartment, we'd settle strata before the quote and choose an inverter split sized for the room, not the biggest one that fits. In an older house, we'd ask the installer to tell us straight whether the old system is worth keeping. We'd want an installer who does that type of job every week. Licence-checked local installers who handle it see the job you send us, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If none near Ryde takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it as well.
