In 2021, 29.2% of Ingleburn homes were semis or townhouses, more than double the Greater Sydney share of 12.8%. In a townhouse, the hardest part of an air conditioning job is often where the outdoor unit can breathe. In the older houses from the 1970s subdivisions, it can be the switchboard. And everywhere, the system has to handle western Sydney heat.

What's behind an Ingleburn job

An 1885 village that kept growing

Ingleburn village began in 1885 when Fitz Stubbs subdivided his land. More subdivisions followed on the outskirts in the 1970s, including Housing Commission developments.

Industry to the west

A large area west of the railway was rezoned for industry in 1969, and the west side of the suburb is largely industrial.

Lots of townhouses

In 2021, 66.7% of homes were separate houses, 29.2% semis, terraces or townhouses and 4.0% flats. 34.1% were rented and 36.3% had a mortgage.

Between Liverpool and Campbelltown

Ingleburn sits roughly halfway between the two, 45 km south-west of the CBD. We have no Bureau station for Ingleburn itself. Liverpool, to the north, averages 41 days a year above 30 degrees, and Camden Airport, to the south-west, has a July mean minimum of 3.0.

Zone 6

The ABCB climate zone map shades the Campbelltown council area zone 6, mild temperate, with the rest of western Sydney.

Where does the outdoor unit go in a townhouse?

The ACT Government guide says to plan the outdoor unit around easy access for servicing, noise for the neighbours and fresh air reaching it. It says to avoid enclosed courtyards and never to box the unit in. In a small Ingleburn courtyard with walls on three sides, that's a real constraint. Hot air the unit pushes out has nowhere to go, and it ends up breathing its own exhaust.

Options worth asking about are a wall bracket higher up where air moves, a spot on the open side of the courtyard, or a longer pipe run to a better position. If the townhouse is in a strata scheme, the owners corporation has to approve it as a minor renovation, and anything that changes the outside of the building can need a special resolution.

In a house from the 1970s

Mitsubishi Electric says an air conditioner needs its own dedicated power supply and correct earthing. An older switchboard may not have room for a new circuit, and that's work for a licensed electrician. Ask for it to be checked on the first visit, not on installation day. See electrical work for air conditioning.

For a three-bedroom house, two or three splits or a multi-split often makes more sense than ducted, and the ACT Government guide says splits suit houses under about 180 square metres. Size each one for western Sydney's hot afternoons: ActronAir says capacity drops above 35 degrees.

What we'd do

Our call for Ingleburn

In a townhouse, we'd agree the outdoor unit's spot with the strata, and make sure it has open air, before anything else. In an older house, we'd have the switchboard checked first. Then we'd pick reverse cycle splits sized for hot afternoons and checked for heating on cold Camden-style mornings. Licence-checked installers around Ingleburn who do this kind of job can see your request, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If no one near Ingleburn takes it in 48 hours, installers from other parts of NSW may see it as well.

Questions people ask

Can I put a split system in my Ingleburn rental?
Only with the lease allowing it or the landlord's written permission. A split means drilling through a wall, so it isn't one of the minor changes NSW landlords can't unreasonably refuse.
Why does my courtyard air conditioner struggle in summer?
If the outdoor unit is boxed into a small courtyard, it may be breathing its own hot exhaust. The ACT Government guide warns against enclosed courtyards. Check nothing is blocking it, then ask an installer whether it should move. See air conditioning repair in Sydney.
