What sets the Hawkesbury apart
The coldest nights in Sydney
Richmond averages 38 nights a year below 2 degrees and 17 below zero. On winter nights, cold, dense air drains down from the Blue Mountains into the Hawkesbury Basin as light south-westerly winds.
A big, mostly rural council
The City of Hawkesbury covers 2,776 km2 on Sydney's north-west edge. Windsor and Richmond are the main towns, the south has grown into suburbs such as Bligh Park, McGraths Hill and South Windsor, and the north is still farmland and national park.
Old towns
Windsor, Richmond, Castlereagh, Wilberforce and Pitt Town are Governor Macquarie's towns, set up by 1811, and many early 19th-century buildings survive.
Houses, with room for ducts
In 2021, 86.8% of homes in the Hawkesbury council area were separate houses and only 2.9% were flats. Homes averaged 3.5 bedrooms; 24.0% were rented.
Heating on a frosty Hawkesbury morning
Reverse cycle is a heat pump, and the ACT Government guide says air at 0 degrees still holds over 90% of the heat energy of air at 40 degrees. Good systems keep working well below freezing. What you'll notice on a frosty Richmond morning is the defrost cycle: Mitsubishi Electric says the outdoor unit can stop for up to 10 minutes to melt frost when it's cold and humid outside.
When you compare systems, read the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the energy label. That's the number that matters at 7 am in July here. If you heat with gas now, have the heater serviced at least every two years by a licensed gasfitter, as Energy Safe Victoria advises. Our gas heater service in Sydney page has more.
If your block has flooded before
Get Ready Queensland's flood advice is to raise air conditioner units and switchboards above the flood level, and that logic holds on the Hawkesbury floodplain too. Ask for a raised stand or wall bracket that still lets the unit be serviced safely. If an outdoor unit or its wiring has been under water, don't turn it on. Have a licensed electrician and an installer check it before it runs again.
Heritage buildings in Windsor and Richmond
Under the NSW exempt rules, an air conditioner on a heritage-listed house must be ground-mounted, at or behind the rear building line, and the same placement applies in a heritage conservation area. Check with Hawkesbury City Council first.
What we'd do
If we lived in the Hawkesbury
We'd pick reverse cycle on its heating output first, with the 2 degree figure on the quote, and size it so it doesn't struggle on summer afternoons either. In a three or four-bedroom house, we'd look hard at zoned ducted. On a flood-prone block, the outdoor unit would go up, not on a slab. We'd want an installer who does Hawkesbury jobs often enough to know the frosts. Licence-checked installers who do that work can see your job, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If nobody out your way takes it within 48 hours, installers from elsewhere in NSW may also see it.
