Dapto and its neighbours
By the lake
Dapto is on the western side of Lake Illawarra, 14 km south-west of Wollongong. Founded in 1834, it turned to dairying and moved its town centre to the railway station when the line opened in 1887.
Growing to the west
Horsley, Dapto's western neighbour, has expanded since 1999 and has many newly developed houses. West of it is Mount Bong Bong, part of the Illawarra escarpment, and much of the land around is the last left for housing developers.
Cooler nights than the city
The Bureau's Albion Park (Shellharbour Airport) station, also below the escarpment, averages a July minimum of 6.5 degrees and has dropped to minus 2.0. Wollongong University's July average is 8.4.
Mostly family houses
At the 2021 Census, 84.7% of Dapto's occupied homes were separate houses and 12.8% semis or townhouses. 37.9% were owned with a mortgage, 34.7% owned outright and 24.7% rented.
In a newer Horsley or Dapto house
If the house is recent and has a roof space, ducted reverse cycle is usually the neat answer: one outdoor unit, a vent in each room and zones for living areas and bedrooms. Ask for the heating capacity on the quote, not just the cooling, because winter mornings here are cooler than on the coast.
Some newer homes come with a single split in the living room. Adding a multi-split for the bedrooms is a common second step. Our multi-split page explains when that beats ducting.
In an older Dapto home
If your home has a gas heater (Jemena distributes natural gas around Wollongong), Seeley says it needs a service by a licensed gasfitter at least every two years. See gas heater service in Wollongong.
If you're replacing gas with reverse cycle, the NSW Energy Savings Scheme can take a discount off a high efficiency air conditioner, through an installer working with an Accredited Certificate Provider. The form has to be signed before the work starts, and a gas heater installed from 1 July 2026 gets nothing from the scheme.
What we'd do
What we'd do in Dapto
In a newer house with a roof space, we'd go zoned ducted reverse cycle and check the heating output covers those cooler nights. In an older home with an ageing gas heater, we'd get it serviced now and get a reverse cycle quote for the living area at the same time, so the decision's made before winter rather than in it.
