Wollongong, New South Wales
Heating and cooling in WollongongA mild climate, plenty of salt and damp, and the escarpment at your back.
Wollongong is gentle on heating and cooling: Wollongong University station's January mean maximum is 25.8 degrees and its July mean minimum 8.4. What it does have is humidity, salt air off the Tasman Sea, and colder nights as you move up towards the escarpment. Most homes are houses, so splits and ducted reverse cycle both come up, and corrosion care matters more here than buying extra capacity.
What's different about Wollongong
A narrow strip between the escarpment and the sea
The City of Wollongong runs along a narrow coastal strip, with the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea on the east and the Illawarra escarpment on the west. NCC lists it as climate zone 5, warm temperate.
Mild, humid summers
January afternoons at Wollongong University station average 68% relative humidity, and February 69%. AdaptNSW says the Illawarra averages fewer than 10 days a year above 35 degrees, though the city's record is 44.1, set on 1 January 2006.
Cold nights inland, not on the beach
The same AdaptNSW snapshot says nights below 2 degrees are very rare along the coast but number up to 50 a year inland along the escarpment.
Windy winters
July and August are Wollongong's windy months, with westerly gales that can gust at over 100 km/h.
Mostly houses
At the 2021 Census, 68.4% of occupied homes in the Wollongong council area were separate houses, 18.5% flats or apartments, and 12.2% semis, terraces or townhouses.
Power and gas
Endeavour Energy names the Illawarra among its network areas, and Jemena distributes natural gas in Wollongong.
The jobs that come up most in Wollongong, and why
Reverse cycle, sized for damp rather than heat. In a warm temperate climate with mild winters, one reverse cycle system usually covers both seasons. Splits suit units and smaller homes, and with so many houses, ducted is an option wherever there's roof space. See installation in Wollongong and ducted in Wollongong.
Servicing that deals with salt. Several brands make extra corrosion protection in sea air the owner's job, and ActronAir describes that as regular washing down of the outdoor unit. On this coast, the yearly service is where that happens.
Repairs for corrosion and drips. Salt works on coils and fixings, and humid weather tests drains. Our Wollongong repairs page has the checks.
Gas heaters up the hill. Homes on Jemena's network that heat with gas need a gasfitter's service at least every two years; see gas heater servicing in Wollongong.
In a Wollongong unit?
If you're among the 18.5% in an apartment, the strata rules come before the quotes. In a NSW strata scheme, a reverse cycle installation is a minor renovation that needs over half the votes cast at a strata meeting, and work that affects the building's outside or structure is a major one that needs a special resolution. Our apartments and strata guide walks through it.
The ESS discount and NSW licences
Wollongong homes may be eligible for the NSW Energy Savings Scheme's upfront discount on an energy efficient air conditioner. It comes through an installer partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider, not from the NSW Government, and Energy NSW says a more efficient model generally attracts a larger discount. The forms have to be completed before installation; see our ESS guide.
Air conditioning work in NSW needs a licence or certificate, and advertising it needs a contractor licence. Look any installer up on Service NSW's licence check before they come.
What we'd do
If we lived in Wollongong
We'd choose reverse cycle, sized for humid summers rather than oversized, and put the outdoor unit on the most sheltered side that still gets good airflow. Near the beach, we'd read the warranty's salt clause before choosing a model and book a yearly service with a wash-down. Up towards the escarpment, we'd check the heating output too. Local specialists who do your kind of job will see it, and if none near Wollongong takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
