In Stirling, buy for winter first. At 496 m, Stirling Post Office records give a July average high of just 10.8 degrees, and the town is the wettest place in South Australia. A reverse cycle system chosen on its heating output, with the outdoor unit kept clear of autumn leaves, suits most homes here.

What's different about Stirling

Cool, and very wet

Sitting close to Mount Lofty, Stirling averages 1,107 mm of rain a year, more than twice Adelaide's. Stirling Post Office records (1964 to 1985) put the July mean minimum at 5.1 degrees and the January mean maximum at 24.9.

Leaves, every autumn

Maples, elms, oaks and ashes brought in from Europe and North America thrive here, and the streets fill with leaves in April and May. Daikin says leaves and debris around an outdoor unit make it run less efficiently.

Big houses, mostly owner-occupied

At the 2021 Census, 94.1% of Stirling's occupied homes were separate houses, averaging 3.4 bedrooms, and only 9.3% were rented.

Grand old homes

Stirling grew from 1854 as a cool retreat from Adelaide's summers, and many historic, grand mansions remain. Rinnai says higher ceilings demand more from a system, which matters in a big older room.

The jobs that come up most in Stirling, and why

A heat pump for the living room. The usual first job is a reverse cycle split that can carry the main room through a damp July. Judge it on the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the energy label, not the cooling stars.

Whole-house heating. One split rarely heats a house this size. The ACT Government's buyers guide points homes over 180 sqm towards ducted or multi-head systems, and ducted air conditioning in Adelaide covers zoning a big house.

Cold-morning calls that aren't faults. Mitsubishi Electric says frost builds on the outdoor unit when it's cold and humid outside, and heating pauses for up to 10 minutes while it defrosts. Stirling's wet winters bring plenty of those mornings.

A service after leaf fall. Mitsubishi Electric recommends a professional service once a year, and late autumn suits Stirling, once the leaves are down. See aircon servicing in Adelaide.

What you can do, and what needs an installer

You can

  • Rake leaves away from the outdoor unit from ground level, and keep a clear gap around it.
  • Clean the indoor filters as your manual says. Daikin says every two weeks in normal use.
  • Wait out a defrost pause before deciding the unit has failed.

Leave to a licensed installer

  • Cleaning the outdoor coil and anything inside either unit.
  • Any refrigerant work, which needs an ARC licence.
  • New circuits or wiring, which need a licensed electrician.

What we'd do

If it were our home

We'd start with one well-sized heat pump in the room you live in, chosen on its output at 2 degrees, with the outdoor unit where leaves won't bank up against it and someone can reach it without a ladder. After one Stirling winter, you'll know whether the bedrooms need their own units or a ducted system.

Tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers who do heat pump work in the Hills can see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If nobody near Stirling takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in South Australia may see it too.

Questions people ask

Is a reverse cycle system warm enough for a Stirling winter?
Yes, if it's sized for heating. The ACT Government's guide says good reverse cycle systems keep working at minus 10 degrees, and Stirling's July nights average about 5.
Why does my heat pump stop and steam on cold mornings?
It's almost always defrosting. Mitsubishi Electric says the white smoke is vapour from the defrost cycle, and heating can stop for up to 10 minutes. If it pauses far longer than that, get it checked.
Do I need cooling in Stirling at all?
Not often. Stirling's January average high is 24.9 degrees against 30.0 at Kent Town, but hot days still come, and a reverse cycle system covers them with the unit that heats you in winter.
