Why Maleny is different from the coast
Cool days, not just cool nights
At Maleny (Tamarind Street), July's mean maximum is 18.8 degrees and its mean minimum 9.1, and the lowest on record is 1.4. January's mean top is 26.7, against 29.1 at Sunshine Coast Airport.
Rain and damp
Average rainfall is about 2000 mm a year on these humid eastern slopes. Mitsubishi Electric says dirt or dust inside an indoor unit can cause odours and help mould grow, so damp climates reward regular cleaning.
Houses, long owned
91.4% of occupied homes were separate houses at the 2021 Census and only 1.3% were flats. 55.4% were owned outright, so most jobs are the owner's call.
An old timber and dairy town
Maleny was a timber town until the early 1920s, then a dairy and fruit centre. Older homes weren't built with pipes, ducts or an aircon circuit in mind, so ask where everything will run.
Check for mains gas first
The Queensland Government's list of natural gas networks doesn't include the Sunshine Coast. Plan on electric heating, and reverse cycle is the efficient way to do it.
Heritage places
Fairview on Porter's Lane and the Maleny Lodge Guest House are heritage listed. On a listed building, speak to Sunshine Coast Council before fixing anything outside.
Heating a Maleny house with reverse cycle
A reverse cycle system moves heat in from the outside air instead of making it, which the ACT Government says is how it does better than a resistance heater. Its guide says good systems still work at minus 10 degrees, far colder than anything Maleny has recorded.
Compare the heating side of the energy label, not just the cooling. The zoned label shows heating capacity at 7 and 2 degrees outside, which is much closer to a Maleny winter morning than the 35-degree cooling test.
On cold, damp mornings the outdoor unit can pause for up to 10 minutes to defrost, sometimes with white vapour. Mitsubishi Electric says both are normal.
For a whole house, see ducted reverse cycle on the Sunshine Coast.
Your part in a damp climate, and the installer's
You can
- Clean the filters as often as your manual says. Mitsubishi Electric's says every 2 weeks.
- Keep wet leaves and garden debris clear of the outdoor unit.
- Note any musty smell at start-up and mention it when you book a service.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Cleaning inside the indoor unit, which Mitsubishi Electric says owners should never try.
- Any work on the refrigerant, which needs an ARC licence.
- New circuits or wiring, which need a licensed electrician.
What we'd do
If it were our place in Maleny
We'd treat heating as the main job: a reverse cycle system sized from a heat load on the house, compared on its heating capacity at 2 degrees, with the filters cleaned often because of the damp. In a bigger house we'd zone it, or use a split per room, so only the rooms in use get warmed. Send us the job and your 4552 postcode. Where we have licence-checked installers near Maleny who do this work, they see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If nobody near Maleny has taken it after 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Queensland may see it too.
