Nambour, the facts that matter
A valley town under the range
Nambour lies in the hinterland at the foot of the Blackall Range, and it's the administrative centre of the Sunshine Coast Region.
Cold mornings, hot afternoons
The Nambour DPI station (1953 to 2007) gives July a mean low of 7.6 degrees and January a mean top of 29.3, just above the airport's 29.1.
Built around sugar
The railway arrived in 1891 and the Moreton Central Sugar Mill ran from 1897 until 2003, drawing mill and cane workers to town. The former mill workers' housing in Mill and Bury Streets is heritage listed.
A town of houses, and renters
66.3% of occupied homes were separate houses at the 2021 Census, 20.3% townhouses and 13.1% flats. 38.0% were rented.
Why heating matters more in Nambour
With July lows averaging 7.6 degrees, winter heating gets real use here, not just on the odd cold snap. On the Sunshine Coast that means electric, because the Queensland Government's list of natural gas networks doesn't include the region.
A reverse cycle system is the efficient way to do it. The ACT Government suggests asking whether a split has an H2 rating, which it says means the unit heats efficiently through a Canberra winter, far colder than Nambour's.
An older timber home can lose a lot of heat through gaps and thin insulation. Rinnai says good insulation holds temperature and sun-facing rooms need more cooling, so a heat load on your actual house beats a size off a chart. Reverse cycle air conditioning goes deeper.
What to ask a Nambour installer
- What heating capacity will this system give me on a cold July morning?
- How does this model rate for heating on its energy label?
- Can my switchboard take a dedicated circuit for it?
- Where will the outdoor unit go, and is it near a neighbour's bedroom?
- If I rent, will you wait for the owner's written approval before starting?
What we'd do
If we lived in Nambour
We'd buy for winter as well as summer: a reverse cycle system sized from a heat load and compared on its heating figures, with the bedrooms on their own split or zone. In an older house we'd get the switchboard checked first. Send us the job and your 4560 postcode. If we have licence-checked installers near Nambour who do this kind of work, they see it, and the one who takes it is the only one to get your contact details. If 48 hours pass and no one near Nambour has taken it, installers from other parts of Queensland may see it.
