Zone 5 on the map
The ABCB's climate zone map shades the Canterbury-Bankstown council area zone 5 (warm temperate), the same as Sutherland and the Northern Beaches.
19 km inland
Bankstown is 19 km south-west of the CBD, well past the 9 km or so that summer sea breezes reach.
Mostly units
At the 2021 Census, 58.5% of occupied homes were flats or apartments, 30.0% separate houses and 10.1% semis or townhouses.
Half rented
50.4% of occupied homes were rented, so landlord permission is part of many jobs.
A cold record too
The airport's lowest recorded temperature is minus 4.0 degrees, in July.
Why the climate zone can mislead
The zone comes from the building code's climate map. It isn't a sizing tool. ActronAir says an air conditioner loses cooling capacity above 35 degrees, giving the example of a 14 kW system dropping to 10 or 12 kW, so a unit that's only just big enough can fall short on the days you need it.
Bigger isn't automatically better, though. Rinnai says an oversized system short cycles and removes moisture less effectively. Ask for a heat load that accounts for your rooms, insulation and the afternoon sun, as Mitsubishi Electric recommends, and try our size calculator for a first idea.
The usual Bankstown jobs
Splits in units. NSW treats a new reverse cycle air conditioner as a minor strata renovation, so the owners corporation votes on it unless a by-law hands it to the committee. Where the outdoor unit goes usually decides how easy that vote is. See apartments and strata.
Ducted or multi-room in houses. In a Bankstown house, ask for the capacity at 35 degrees in writing. Our Sydney ducted page covers what a good quote shows.
A spring service. Daikin's advice is a licensed technician's check as each summer begins, so book in spring, before the first heatwave rather than during it.
What we'd do
What we'd do in Bankstown
We'd ignore the zone and size for the airport's summers, with enough heating for a frosty July morning. In a unit we'd get the strata and landlord answers first. Then we'd want an installer who fits systems in south-west Sydney week in, week out. Licence-checked installers near Bankstown who do that work can see your job, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. After 48 hours with nobody near Bankstown taking it, installers elsewhere in NSW may see it too.
