What's different about Penrith
The heat is measured, street by street
Penrith City Council's heat research put temperature loggers at 120 sites across the city. On the day Penrith hit 48.9, they read up to 52 degrees at Berkshire Park and 51.5 at Agnes Banks. The long-run averages agree: Penrith gets 67 days a year above 30, against 15 in the CBD.
Cold nights, too
Penrith Lakes averages a July minimum of 5.4 degrees, and frost turns up on some winter mornings. If a reverse cycle system is also your heater, its heating output deserves as much attention as its cooling.
More units than you'd think
In the suburb itself, 43.4% of homes were flats or apartments at the 2021 Census and another 20.4% were townhouses, semis or terraces. Only 36.0% were separate houses.
Most homes are rented
60.2% of Penrith's homes were rented in 2021. If you're one of them, a new unit or a replacement is the owner's decision, so the request goes through them or the agent.
Well past the sea breeze
Penrith sits 55 km inland with the Nepean River on its western edge. The north-easterly sea breeze that cools the coast doesn't make it 9 km inland, so the west runs 6 to 10 degrees hotter on late spring and summer days.
Which jobs come up most in Penrith?
Ducted reverse cycle in the houses. ActronAir says an air conditioner loses cooling capacity above 35 degrees, and its example is a 14 kW system dropping to 10 or 12 kW. In Penrith that's the afternoon to size for. A ducted specialist should work out the heat load room by room rather than guess from floor area. More on ducted air conditioning in Sydney.
Splits in units and townhouses near the station. NSW strata rules treat a new reverse cycle unit as a minor renovation, so it needs majority support at a strata meeting unless a by-law hands the decision to the committee. Get that sorted before collecting quotes. The apartments and strata guide covers the paperwork.
Repairs in the first heatwave. A unit that struggled last January is the one to look at in spring, while installers still have room in their week. See air conditioning service in Sydney.
What we'd do
If we lived in Penrith
We'd size for the 40-plus afternoon, then check the heating capacity at 2 degrees on the energy label, because that's closer to a Penrith July morning than the 7 degree figure. We'd want the outdoor unit with plenty of air around it, and in a unit we'd get the strata answer first. Then we'd want an installer who does that exact job in the west every week. Tell us the job and your postcode: licence-checked installers near Penrith who do that work will see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. Once 48 hours go by with nobody near Penrith taking it, installers from other parts of NSW may see it.
