What shapes the job in Bacchus Marsh
A town out past the city
Bacchus Marsh is in the Shire of Moorabool, approximately 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, 118 m above sea level. The town itself had 7,808 people in 2021 and its wider urban area 24,717.
Houses with room for ducts
Of the town's 3,155 occupied homes, 84.2% were separate houses and just 2.0% flats or apartments. 46.6% had three bedrooms and 33.4% had four or more.
Estates still going up
Darley and Maddingley keep growing fast, and building has spread to Underbank, Parwan, Hopetoun Park and Merrimu. Darley, north of the town centre across the Western Freeway, had 9,190 people in 2021.
Gas depends on the paperwork
Australian Gas Networks says new homes and subdivisions that need a planning permit have had to be all-electric since 1 January 2024, unless the application went in before that date. From 1 January 2027, every new Victorian home is built all electric.
Which jobs come up, and why
Heating a whole family home. In a 2021 survey for the Victorian Government, 59% of owners who'd decided against reverse cycle heating said a larger house needs several splits. Gas ducted, ducted reverse cycle or a multi-split are the usual answers for a four-bedroom house. Our Melbourne ducted heating and ducted air conditioning pages set out the trade-offs.
An all-electric new build. With no gas, reverse cycle is the likely way to both heat and cool. ActronAir says ducted zones work through dampers in the ductwork, and the whole system runs in heating or cooling at one time, so plan the zones around how you use the house.
A landlord's heater fails. 25.8% of the town's homes were rented in 2021. From 1 March 2027, a failed main living area heater in a Victorian rental has to be replaced with an efficient electric one. Our rental heating rules guide explains the ratings.

What we'd do
Where we'd start in Bacchus Marsh
Find out first whether you have gas, or could get it. If you're on gas with ducted heating that works, keep it and service it. If the house is all-electric, or you're still building, put ducted reverse cycle and a multi-split side by side, each sized from a heat load for your house.
