What's different about Hastings
A sheltered bay
Hastings sits on a crescent-shaped bay opening onto Western Port, protected from the prevailing winds. It has one small beach; most of its coastline is mudflats with mangrove forests, and a foreshore reserve runs nearly all the way to Crib Point.
Calm water still means salt
The Galvanizers Association of Australia rates the immediate vicinity of calm salt water, and the first 50 m inland around sheltered bays, as C4 for corrosion. From 50 m to 1 km it's C3.
Built in the 1960s and 70s
Significant residential development came in the 1960s and 1970s with industry and public housing. By 1970 there was a rush of land subdivisions well beyond demand.
Fire at the reserve edge
In January 2015 a fast-moving 131-hectare fire in Jacks Beach Reserve, driven by extreme heat and wind, destroyed sheds and back fences on Warranqite Crescent and forced residents to evacuate.
Townhouses and rentals
At the 2021 Census, 72.8% of occupied homes were separate houses and 24.7% townhouses or similar. 30.8% were rented.
Outdoor units near Western Port
If you're within a street or two of the foreshore, treat the outdoor unit as coastal. Mitsubishi Electric lists salty places such as the seaside among places to avoid installing its air conditioners, and Daikin's warranty card makes the owner responsible for extra corrosion protection in sea air. Ask what protection the quote includes. Our coastal homes guide explains the options.
Near the reserves, keep the unit's surrounds clear. Daikin says leaves and debris make an outdoor unit run less efficiently.
Heating a 1960s or 1970s Hastings home
If a heater from that era is still running, it's done its time, and the choice of what replaces it is yours if you own the home. In a rental, the 2027 standards change what a failed main heater can be replaced with: it has to be efficient and electric, such as a reverse cycle split. See our rental heating guide.
Licence-checked installers who do this kind of work around Hastings will see your job, and only the one who takes it is given your contact details. When no one around Hastings has taken it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Victoria may also see it.
What we'd do
If it were our place in Hastings
Close to the water, we'd ask every installer to name the coastal protection on the outdoor unit in writing, and we'd check the brand's warranty conditions for sea air before choosing. Then we'd book a yearly service and keep the unit clear of leaves and debris.
