What shapes the job between Manly and Palm Beach
A long run of ocean beaches
The region runs from the entrance of Port Jackson up to Broken Bay along the Pacific, with Middle Harbour to the west and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on its north-western side. Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Avalon Beach and Palm Beach all face the surf.
Salt bands by distance
The Galvanizers Association's guide to AS 4312 rates the strip within 200 m of surf beaches as C5, its harshest band, 200 m to 1 km inland as C4, and 1 km to 10 km along surf coasts with significant salt spray as C3. It notes prevailing winds can push those bands further inland.
Houses from the 1960s on
The area stayed largely rural until the 1960s, when development sped up. If a system came with the house, find out how old it is before you pay to repair it.
A third of homes are units
At the 2021 Census, 57.3% of homes in the council area were separate houses and 33.4% were flats or apartments. 26.9% were rented.
A milder climate band
The ABCB's climate zone map puts the Northern Beaches council area in zone 5, warm temperate, alongside Sydney East. Summers here are gentler than out west, which is one more reason not to oversize.
How far from the surf are you?
| Corrosion band in the AS 4312 guide | What we'd ask the installer | |
|---|---|---|
| Within 200 m of a surf beach | C5, surf sea-shore | Which models carry a coastal coil treatment, and can the unit sit on the side away from the spray? |
| 200 m to 1 km back | C4 | How often should it be washed down, and does the brand's warranty ask for that? |
| 1 km to 10 km along the surf coast | C3, where salt spray is significant | Is the unit facing the prevailing wind, and could it go somewhere more sheltered? |
What the warranty asks of a coastal owner
Daikin's warranty card makes the owner responsible for extra corrosion protection where there's sea air, and excludes coil damage from salt. ActronAir describes that protection as regular washing down of the outdoor unit, panels and coils with a mild detergent. Daikin says its outdoor coils carry an anti-corrosion treatment, but that positioning and maintenance still matter.
So read the warranty before you sign, and ask the installer to write the care routine on the quote. Once it's in writing, it's easy to keep up, and a regular service is a natural time to do it.
What we'd do
What we'd do on the Beaches
We'd start by pacing out how far the outdoor unit would be from the sand, then choose the wall or corner most sheltered from the onshore wind. We'd pick a model with a coastal coil treatment if we were in the first few streets, and we'd book a wash-down with every service. In a unit block, we'd ask the strata manager about placement before the installer visits. We'd want someone who installs on the coast all the time. Send us the job and your postcode, and licence-checked local installers who do this work will see it; only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If no one on the Northern Beaches takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in New South Wales may see it too.
