Keilor is a suburb of large, owner-occupied houses: 48.8% have four or more bedrooms and 48.2% are owned outright. So most jobs here are whole-house heating jobs, and the real question is usually whether an older heater is worth keeping. Nights are cold, too. Melbourne Airport, right next door, averages 5.8 degrees on a July night.

Keilor in four facts

Built on cheap postwar land

Keilor stayed farmland until after World War II, then grew fast on cheap land. Victorian Places says housing spread out along Keilor Road from the 1960s, and the old Keilor municipality went from 3,248 people in 1947 to 29,519 in 1961.

Houses, not flats

At the 2021 Census, 86.8% of Keilor's homes were separate houses and 0.0% were flats. Only 9.1% were rented, so most decisions here are an owner's call, with no landlord or owners corporation in the way.

Colder than the city overnight

Bureau of Meteorology averages for Melbourne Airport give a July mean minimum of 5.8 degrees and a July maximum of just 13.4, against a 7.3 degree July night at Olympic Park. Summers still reach a January mean maximum of 27.0 degrees.

Down in the river basin

The old township sits in a basin of the Maribyrnong River, and the suburb's northern section is on the river's flood plain. On a low block, where the outdoor unit sits is worth a conversation.

What a whole-house job in Keilor looks like

Keeping the gas heater going. Energy Safe Victoria's advice is a service by a qualified gasfitter at least every two years. In a four-bedroom house with outlets in every room, ask them to check the airflow and the ducts while they're up there. Our Melbourne ducted heating service page covers what a good service includes.

Replacing it. The choice is another gas ducted heater or ducted reverse cycle, which heats and cools. Zoning matters in a big house: ActronAir describes dampers in the ductwork that let you heat the living areas and bedrooms separately. Budget for new ducts with reverse cycle, because the ACT Government says old gas ducts are too narrow for it.

Adding cooling. Some gas ducted heaters can take an add-on cooling unit through the same ducts. Rinnai says it depends on the age, model, capacity and condition of the heater and ductwork, and not every heater can. See add-on cooling.

Your part, and the licensed part

You can

  • Clean or swap the return air filter as the manual says.
  • Keep plants and stored gear clear of the outdoor unit.
  • Write down when the heater locks out or the flame looks different, and tell the gasfitter.

Leave to a licensed installer

  • Gas heater servicing and carbon monoxide checks (a licensed gasfitter).
  • Anything that touches refrigerant (an ARC licence holder).
  • New circuits or switchboard work (a licensed electrician).

What we'd do

If it were our Keilor house

Book a heater service in autumn and ask the gasfitter for a straight answer on its age and condition. If it's on borrowed time, get two quotes side by side: a new gas heater, and zoned ducted reverse cycle. Decide while the old one still runs, so you're not choosing in a cold snap.

Questions people ask

Is Keilor colder than the city in winter?
The Bureau's figures for Melbourne Airport, next door, say yes at night: a July average of 5.8 degrees against 7.3 at Olympic Park. Size heating for those nights, not for the city average.
Can I add cooling to my gas ducted heating?
Sometimes. It depends on the heater's model and age and on the ducts, so get a ducted specialist to check compatibility before you buy anything. If the heater's old, replacing the lot with reverse cycle may make more sense.
How does a Keilor job reach an installer?
You tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers near Keilor who do that kind of work see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If it isn't taken near Keilor within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Victoria may see it as well.
