What's different about Ipswich
Hotter summers
The Bureau of Meteorology station at Amberley Air Base, which Wikipedia's Climate of Brisbane calls distant inland, averages a January maximum of 31.7 degrees and holds a record of 44.3.
Real winter nights
July's average low at Amberley is 5.1 degrees. Wikipedia says places directly west of Brisbane such as Ipswich have dropped as low as minus 5 degrees with heavy ground frost.
Old houses, and lots of them
Ipswich is known for its historic buildings, with house styles running from Early Colonial and Victorian through to the Queensland Bungalow, built until 1935. The traditional home is a detached house on its own block.
A flood history
The 1974 flood peaked at 20.7 m and flooded about 1,800 homes and businesses. In January 2011 water reached the CBD and at least 3,000 houses, worst in Goodna and Gailes.
Growing fast
Ipswich is described as South East Queensland's fastest-growing area, with Springfield and Ripley taking much of the growth. The Ripley Valley is planned for about 120,000 people.
Houses and renters
Across the Ipswich council area in 2021, 88.7% of homes were separate houses and 39.4% of homes were rented. The median age was 33. The main postcode is 4305.
Sizing for both ends of the year
It's easy to buy for summer and only find out in July how well a unit heats. Out here, read both sides of the energy label. Mitsubishi Electric explains the zoned label shows blue stars for cooling and red stars for heating, so for an Ipswich home, compare the red heating stars as closely as the blue ones.
Ask for a heat load, not a rule of thumb. Mitsubishi Electric lists climate, orientation, insulation, windows and doors, construction and ceiling height as the factors a proper calculation should cover.
Old timber homes and new estates
In an older Ipswich house, a split in each main room or a multi-head system is often simpler than ducts, especially if the under-house area has been closed in. Rinnai says higher ceilings demand more from a system, so tall old rooms need sizing on their own.
In the new estates around Springfield and Ripley, zoned ducted air conditioning in the roof space is worth a look for a whole house. Our Springfield page looks at that area in more detail.
If your street has flooded
Get Ready Queensland's flood resilience advice includes raising air conditioner units and switchboards above the flood level. If water has come up your street before, ask for the outdoor unit on a high bracket or platform, written into the quote, and keep any unit that's been under water switched off until a licensed technician has checked it.
What we'd do
If it were our Ipswich home
We'd choose reverse cycle sized from a proper heat load, and we'd read the heating figures on the label before the cooling ones, because Amberley's July nights average 5.1 degrees, about half the city centre's 10.5. In a flood-prone street we'd mount the outdoor unit high. And we'd want an installer who does Ipswich homes every week, old and new. Tell us the job and your postcode. Licence-checked installers who do reverse cycle work can see it, and the one who picks it up is the only one who gets your contact details. If nobody in Ipswich takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Queensland may see it too.
