Burwood's homes and history
A late starter
eMelbourne says being split among three municipalities held Burwood back, so most suburban growth came after World War II, in brick veneer. Australia's first drive-in cinema opened there in 1954.
Along the highway
Wikipedia says the 1912 Toorak Road tram extension sparked residential development, and after the war building moved east along Burwood Highway. Deakin University's campus stands on the old Albers' Daffodil Farm.
Who lives here
In 2021, 57.9% of occupied homes were separate houses and 26.6% townhouses or semi-detached. 37.2% were rented, 30.2% owned outright, and 31.3% had four or more bedrooms.
Two councils
Burwood is split between the Cities of Whitehorse and Monash. Your rates notice says which one deals with your property.
Jobs most likely in Burwood
Old gas heating in a brick veneer house. Energy Safe Victoria says any gas heater can spill carbon monoxide, old or new, and says to have it serviced at least every two years by a qualified gasfitter. Our Melbourne gas heater service page explains what's involved.
Replacing ducted heating. Before quoting a new unit, a ducted heating specialist should look at the ducts. The ACT Government guide notes old gas ducts can have age-related issues, and that they're too narrow to reuse if you switch to reverse cycle. See ducts and vents.
Rental checks. Victorian rental providers must have a gas safety check done every 2 years by a licensed or registered gasfitter where there are gas appliances. From 13 October 2026, those checks apply to all rental properties.
Signs a gas heater needs attention now
Better Health lists a yellow or sooty flame (unless it's a decorative log fire), a pilot light that keeps going out or pops and bangs when it lights, and soot stains around the heater. If people or pets feel dizzy, sick or headachy only at home, Energy Safe Victoria says get everyone outside into fresh air, turn off the gas appliances and open the doors and windows. Call Nurse-on-Call or a doctor, or 000 in an emergency, and leave the heater off until a qualified gasfitter has checked it.
What we'd do
Our take for Burwood
Get the gas heater serviced in autumn, at least every second year. If it's near the end of its life, compare a new gas heater with ducted reverse cycle while it still works, not after it stops on a cold night. Landlords: book the gas safety check now if it's due.
