Suburban since the 1970s
Major suburban development in Epping began in the 1970s, and the northern fringes are still being developed for housing.
Big estates to the north
Vic Urban launched the Aurora estate in Epping North in 2006, planned to house 25,000 people by 2025, with A.V. Jennings' Lyndarum estate between it and Epping Road.
Houses and a lot of townhouses
At the 2021 Census, 81.2% of occupied homes were separate houses, 17.0% townhouses or similar and 1.8% flats. 29.4% were rented.
Hotter and drier
The City of Whittlesea says Whittlesea is becoming hotter and drier, with prolonged periods of above average temperatures. In a heatwave it suggests fans and air conditioning, and sleeping in the coolest room.
What comes up in Epping
An old gas ducted heater. Energy Safe Victoria says to have a gas heater serviced at least once every two years by a qualified gasfitter, and to check the gasfitter's licence online. A heater from Epping's early estates that hasn't been serviced in years should get one before winter, then a straight answer on whether it's worth keeping.
A townhouse that needs cooling. With 17.0% of homes semi-detached or townhouses, a split per room is common. Mind the shared wall: EPA Victoria says cooling mustn't be heard in a neighbour's habitable room after 11pm, or heating after 10pm.
