If you rent in Midland
Check what's there
Look at the remote, the mode and the batteries, clean the filters if the manual allows, and check the breaker hasn't tripped. Don't open the unit or touch the wiring.
Tell the agent or owner in writing
Say what's wrong, when it started and which room it affects. A written request is easier to follow up than a phone call.
Ask, don't install
If there's no heating or cooling at all, ask the owner in writing whether they'll add some. A split is fixed to the building, so it's their decision and their job to arrange.
Let them post the job
If the owner agrees, they can tell us the job and the postcode. Licence-checked local installers who do that work see it, and the one who takes it is the only one given contact details.
What else is different in Midland
Townhouses and apartments
Semi-detached, row and townhouses made up 50.6% of Midland's 2,900 occupied homes in 2021, and flats or apartments 16.8%. Separate houses were only 32.2%.
Strata rules
Townhouses and apartments are often strata-titled, and then the by-laws decide where an outdoor unit can go. Get approval in writing before booking. Our apartments and strata page explains what to ask.
A heritage workshops site
The Midland Railway Workshops ran from 1904 until 1994 and became a State Registered Place in 2008. Across the City of Swan, 676 places are heritage-listed. Ask the council first if your building is one of them.
Inland, north-east
Midland is 15 km north-east of the CBD. Bureau of Meteorology averages show January maximums rising inland, from 29.8 degrees at Swanbourne to 33.6 at RAAF Base Pearce.
For owners and landlords
A reverse cycle split in the main living area is the most common fit for a townhouse: one indoor unit, one outdoor unit, cooling and heating. The ACT Government's guide asks you to think about maintenance access, neighbours' noise and fresh air for the outdoor unit, which matters in tight townhouse rows. Split system installation in Perth covers sizing and WA's licence rules.
What we'd do
What we'd do in Midland
If you rent, we'd put the request in writing and let the owner arrange it. If you own, we'd fit a properly sized reverse cycle split in the living area first, with strata approval sorted beforehand, and an outdoor unit placed with the neighbours in mind.
