Albany Creek at a glance
Suburban since the 1960s
Albany Creek was rural until Brisbane's growth reached it in the 1960s. So you'll find houses from that first wave next to much newer builds, and roof space, ceiling height and the switchboard can differ a lot from one street to the next.
Big houses, few flats
Separate houses made up 85.1% of occupied homes in 2021 and flats just 1.5%. The average was 3.6 bedrooms, so a whole-house system is worth weighing up here.
A townhouse in seven
Townhouses, semis and terraces were 13.4% of homes. If your job touches common property, Queensland's body corporate rules say it needs approval from the committee or a general meeting, and installing air conditioning is their own example of an improvement.
Owners deciding for themselves
Only 15.3% of homes were rented. 46.6% were mortgaged and 33.3% owned outright, so most people here are choosing a system they'll live with and pay to run for years.
City of Moreton Bay
Albany Creek (postcode 4035) is in the City of Moreton Bay, not Brisbane City Council, so planning questions go there.
Ducted, or a split in each room?
The ACT Government's guide puts the line at about 180 square metres: splits for smaller homes or where you only need a room or two, ducted or multi-head for bigger houses. A four-bedroom Albany Creek house often lands on the ducted side, but not always. If you only ever cool the main bedroom and the family room, two splits may do the job.
If you go ducted, the zones are where it earns its keep. ActronAir says zoning works through dampers in the ductwork that open and close for each area. Daikin's own example puts the bedrooms in one zone and the living areas in another, which suits how many families use a house like this.
In a large house, the ACT guide also warns that ducted or multi-head units may need an upgrade to 3-phase power. Ask the installer to look at your switchboard before they quote, not on install day.
When the system you've got is getting on
If your home already has air conditioning, its age counts. Solar Victoria says a system more than 15 years old will typically use over three times the electricity of a modern reverse cycle unit, so a unit that still runs isn't automatically worth keeping. Our repair or replace tool helps you weigh it up, and a service will tell you what condition it's really in.
What we'd do
Our take for Albany Creek
For a four-bedroom house that's lived in end to end, we'd get ducted reverse cycle sized from a proper heat load, with at least a sleeping zone and a living zone. If you only use two or three rooms, we'd put the money into good splits instead. Either way, we'd want someone who does ducted or multi-room work every week. Put the job and your postcode in the form. Licence-checked installers who fit ducted systems will see it, but your details go only to the one who takes it on. If no one near Albany Creek takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Queensland may see it too.
