Shailer Park is a hilly suburb of houses, most of them owner-occupied, with homes going back to the Kimberley Park estate of 1973. That makes the age of your current system and switchboard worth knowing before anyone quotes, and on a sloping block the outdoor unit's position takes more thought than on a flat one.

Shailer Park at a glance

Hills, with bush to the north

The suburb sits on hilly terrain between the Pacific Motorway and the forest and bushland to its north, 29.1 km south-south-east of the Brisbane CBD.

Built from the 1970s

Kimberley Park, in the north-east, was developed in 1973. Shailer Park was named a district in 1971, a locality in 1979 and a suburb in 1991.

Houses, mostly owned

In 2021, 89.8% of homes were separate houses and 51.6% were owned with a mortgage. Only 19.4% were rented, so most households make the call themselves.

Logan's list of hazards

Logan City Council names bushfires, floods, heatwaves, landslides and severe weather as Logan's common hazards, and warns that heatwaves can affect the power supply.

Night-time noise limit

Council says air conditioning can't run between 10pm and 7am if it's more than 3 dB(A) above the background level. On a hillside, think about which neighbours' windows look down on the unit.

Jobs that fit Shailer Park homes

Replacing an older system. In a house from the 1970s or 80s, have the switchboard and circuit checked before a bigger unit is quoted. New circuits are a job for a licensed electrician.

A split on a sloping block. The ACT Government's guide says to ask where the outdoor unit will go, thinking about access for maintenance, noise for the neighbours and fresh air reaching it. On a steep yard that can mean a wall bracket or a longer pipe run, and either should be on the quote. Our split system page covers the rest.

Ducted in a family home. Ducted reverse cycle suits a house where most rooms are in use. Ask for zones so you're not cooling empty rooms.

What we'd do

Where we'd start in Shailer Park

We'd find out how old the current system is and get the electrics looked at before choosing anything bigger. Then we'd put the outdoor unit on the flattest, most sheltered spot that still keeps its noise away from the neighbours' bedrooms. Send us the job. Where we have licence-checked installers who specialise in it, they see it, and only the one who takes it gets your contact details. If no one's close to Shailer Park, we'll tell you.

Questions people ask

Do I need an electrician as well as an air conditioning installer?
Sometimes. In Queensland, electrical work needs a licence from the Electrical Safety Office, and QBCC says a restricted electrical licence for air conditioning doesn't cover installation work such as interconnect cables. Ask who on the job holds which licence.
Can the outdoor unit go on a wall instead of the ground?
Often, yes, on a bracket rated for the unit. It still needs air around it and safe access for servicing. Our page on brackets, covers and pumps explains the options.

We don't publish prices. Every home is different, so an installer's written quote is the only real number. How we write and check these pages.
