North of the river: what matters
Where the northside starts and stops
There's no official boundary. Brisbane people group suburbs by the river, and Wikipedia's list puts 49 City of Brisbane suburbs north of it, including Aspley, Chermside, Nundah, Kedron, Stafford, Mitchelton, Everton Park, Wavell Heights and Bracken Ridge.
Heat is the hazard
Council says extreme heat is most likely from November to March, and names babies, older people, pregnant women, people with medical conditions and outdoor workers among those at higher risk. If someone at home fits that list, cool their bedroom first.
A touch milder at the bay edge
Brisbane Airport, on the northside's bay edge, averages a January top of 29.1 degrees, against 30.8 at inland Archerfield across the river.
Gas comes from AGN
The Queensland Government says Australian Gas Networks supplies Brisbane's northern suburbs, but not every area has a mains network. If you're weighing a gas heater against reverse cycle, check your street first.
Storm water across the yard
Council says overland flow flooding comes from heavy storm-season rain running over land, is hard to predict and usually brief. The dip where water pools after a storm is a poor home for an outdoor unit.
Northside jobs, by kind of home
Rentals around Kedron Brook. In Stafford, 48.6% of homes were rented in 2021, so the owner's written approval often comes before any quote. Our Stafford page has the steps.
The bayside. At Sandgate on Bramble Bay, salt air and streets laid out from the 1880s change where the outdoor unit can go. The Sandgate page covers character and heritage rules.
Houses with roof space. Across Brisbane, 62.6% of occupied homes were separate houses at the 2021 Census. In one with roof space, ducted reverse cycle is worth a quote; ask for zones so the bedrooms can run on their own overnight.
What we'd do
Where we'd begin on the northside
We'd cool the room where the most heat-vulnerable person sleeps, sized for humid nights rather than just the hottest afternoon. Then we'd decide what the rest of the house needs. We'd want an installer with a QBCC licence who does northside homes week in, week out. Licence-checked installers who specialise in your type of job see it where we have them, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If nobody on the northside takes it within 48 hours, installers elsewhere in Queensland may see it too.
